Dear Spirit, I’m debating on whether or not I should move to Florida to be closer to my kids. They are both adults and both live in different parts of Florida. It’s not exactly where I imagined spending my retirement, but I really want to be closer to my kids. What do you think I should do? - Anonymous

Dear Reader,

My initial thought when reading your question was, don’t go. You can’t live your life for other people and if being in Florida is not going to make you happy, then you shouldn’t be there. After all, what are you going to do when your adult children are busy, and your alone in a place you don’t like?

However, there is another side to this coin. After all, I believe that family is the absolute most important thing in our lives and having the chance to spend more time with your kids sounds wonderful. 

So, you really have to ask yourself, is there enough in Florida for you to a make life for yourself, and be happy even when you’re on your own? If the answer is yes, then I would say go for it, and make it work. 

Although, if the only thing you will find joy in is spending time with your kids, then don’t go. Even if you lived with them, you can’t expect them to be there for you every minute, and you still have plenty of life left to be fulfilled. Your kids will always be your family, no matter how far away they are, and with a little effort you can be a part of their lives everyday if you choose. Through phone calls, video chat, and visits on the holidays. 

Distance doesn’t have to separate us, only if we let it. Make the choice that ends the day with you living your life to the fullest.

Happiness

This week's topic from my head was happiness. Am I happy? Does happiness exist? Is being fulfilled different than being happy?

After looking at some pictures of me during the past years and after watching the evolution of the past months of my friend's life, I realized that happiness is a tight chain of compromises. Ups and downs, cross roads, taking back steps, shortcuts, bifurcations... while going all this way, we lose our ideal.

Until 16 I kept putting myself the "Who am I?" question. After having my real first contact with myself, I started giving some answers to that question. Of course, this is a whole-life-opened question, ready for answers at any time, nonetheless, all correct. After that, it came "Who do I want to be?". Lately, that question, though not satisfied with the best answer, became "Where am I?". It seems like, I just got a little lost half way through. That means that I might be fulfilled, but not happy.

Being fulfilled, is being OK with yourself - doing things that make you feel good; an egoistical thing. On the other hand, happiness... well, I believe happiness is shared with others. Being fulfilled is with you; being happy is with the others.

Maybe I haven't found yet the "good" others. Maybe I don't see them clearly. Or maybe, I am just the other with myself. I like to give the illusion that I belong to the others, but they in fact belong to me.

So, am I happy? Maybe not. Am I fulfilled? In progress.
