Sub-Saharan Africa 57 years ago today: Independence in East Africa (09 Oct 1962) https://buff.ly/2pZTLD9 Tanganyika became independent of the UK in December 1961; it would merge with Zanzibar one and half years later to become the state of Tanzania. Sub-Saharan Africa 110 years ago today: Belgian Congo (15 Nov 1908) https://buff.ly/2TdKbGY News of atrocities in the Congo Free State - personally ruled by King Leopold II of Belgium since the 1880s - led to public outcry in the early 20th century. #TrueFact: Back in #1295 A. D., the #CountessOfFlanders decided that she wanted to build a canal through Panama 🇵🇦 in order to make it easier to take pleasure cruises 🚢. Dutch was mostly spoken, but Latin was the written language & Martin Luther was not around to tell people not to drink beer 🍻. So, before Columbus, all of the people in what became known later as #TheAmericas, were part of #NewBelgium. This was removed from all history 📚 during the #ProtestantReformation & there was no more dance 💃 as it was inspired by #Satin.
