Belize day 1–The Belize Zoo
Today was mostly a travel day but we did get a tour of the Belize Zoo right after being picked up at the airport! It was a small but lovely zoo displaying only native species. I loved the enclosure set ups. Because the animals are native, they basically just had perfect little carved out chunks of habitat for each species. The enclosures were well-enriched, decent sized, and naturalistic. This was probably the most visually appealing zoo I’ve been to. Even though they had obvious fences, the whole set up still flowed really nicely. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the animals were very comfortable with him. We got to see some feeding and training too! The smaller cats (ocelot and margays) were set up to climb and jump for some treats, displaying their amazing athletic skills. We also got to see jaguarundi, a Jaguar, scarlet macaws, tapirs, howler and spider monkeys, etc. Top it off with a delicious lunch—a very good start to the trip! My only complaint about the zoo was that there wasn’t much of a barrier between the guests and the enclosures. There were signs, but you can never trust people not to do something stupid.

I loved the cats, but I actually found the tapirs to be very interesting. They are the national animal of Belize and highly protected. I can’t believe how big they are—they can get up to 600 lbs! We got to feed a few of them, which was super cool. The babies are also super cute and have distinct spotting on their backs which only lasts for a few months. Another interesting fact; they apparently have the longest penis in relation to their body!
AHH THE BELIZEAN $20 IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I'M GONNA FRAME ONE WHEN I GET HOME!!!!
finally! i can cross "being trapped on the back of a golf cart going over treacherous cobblestone roads in a small island town in an obscure central american country with my adult cousin as she bombards me with all of her vaccine conspiracy theories" off my bucket list!
