hiiii~ i have finally gotten myself together enough to put some embroidery up for sale! i'm starting with these five hoops - all of them are 3 inches, except the monster under the bed which is 4 inches. i have a lot more that i've made, but i'm only going to stock a few at a time for now, so if you're not into these designs, check back soon! all of my hoops are backed with felt so that they'll hang flush against the wall.

notice how you had to specify the races here. what could that mean? why did you feel it necessary to do that? what if we changed the question to ACTUALLY be about male privilege: "do black men have more [structural] power than black women? do white men have more [structural] power than white women?" notice how much easier the answer becomes. now you might be tempted to throw in another variable like financial status or dis/ability to find exceptions, but again: you are shifting the question. you are changing the rules. these "gray areas" as you've called them are actually referred to as INTERSECTIONS, which is why kimberlé crenshaw coined the term INTERSECTIONALITY. no, it's NOT all black & white, because nobody's identity is just one thing - we all occupy intersecting identities. google "kimberlé crenshaw intersectionality" & you can find her essay or multiple other related texts to explain this concept to you. but when power exists on an axis, like man/woman or white/black or cis/trans, there is going to be one dominant side & one oppressed side, WHEN YOU STICK TO THAT AXIS.
understanding social class is not a bad thing just because radical feminists might also speak of class. that's like saying the color red is bad because it was used in the nazi flag. you gotta be smarter than this.

REAL IMPORTANT DISTINCTION for meaningful conversation: are we talking about a constructed social class or about an individual
"White people" or "white person". I do not have to get upset when someone says "white people do _______". Does literally every white person do _______? Seems unlikely. But do most/many/enough as a social class for the commentary to be accurate? YEAH PROBABLY. That commentary is not about me, it is about my social class (unless it IS a behavior I do and/or way I think, in which case I can then work some more at the racism that is unavoidably in me without a shame spiral because that helps literally no one
OP I've been trying to point to this for a while but didn't have the specific language, thank you.
The intent in the example is fine and all, but if we're truly conducting any kind of analysis or meaningful conversation, it remains that clear language is important. Because absolutely, there's a massive population of people who do (and have said they do) mean all men or all white people or all [pick your favorite group to hate on], and not merely a "class" of people who generically engage in your hated activity sometimes.
So excusing inaccurate language and making it the audience's problem and fault for not knowing or understanding what you mean is not the answer. If you are unclear in your message, that is in fact your fault. If you are going to say "all men" and later insist you meant "Men, the class," then you're moving the goalpost and creating a bad faith situation. And that's your doing, not the audience.
Many people do mean all men. Many people want to hate every last person of whatever majority class they deem oppressive. There's so many in fact, that no one has cause to take ambiguous "all men" language in good faith. There's no reason to suspect that the individual complainer is objective or sensible. Many are simply not; they want payback and they don't care who they throw under the bus to get it.
If you want a good faith discussion, it starts with using clear language. There's nothing about a convoluted justification for ambiguous terms that actually helps anyone. All you're saying is "you should have read my mind, I'm right all along."

i mean, if you're asking ME, yes all men because all men have male privilege. that is not a radical statement, that's just how it works. that's extremely basic. i'm not going to dance around trying to come up with caveats or exceptions. i was not unclear, i said what i said & what i said is what i meant. there are trans men who are desperate to argue that they don't have male privilege when what they actually lack is cis privilege. it is not my job to get you to understand intersectionality, it's a core concept & you can do your own reading. i am not your teacher & the audience i was talking to is not necessarily you. just because you saw my post & wandered into my conversation doesn't mean it's tailored to you & your understanding or lack thereof. sorry i guess. i'm speaking as someone who went to college & took women's studies & sociology courses, speaking to an educated transfeminist audience. it is anti-intellectual & shuts down discourse if you expect me to put a glossary of terms at the beginning of my tumblr post that was just me having a thought. i'm not writing a dissertation. i don't owe you more. if you don't understand what i'm saying, consider maybe i wasn't talking to you.
