Bella Kaye on her music evolution, “Empty Promises” and the future of her career.
At just 16 years old, Bella Kaye’s EP Reflections highlights the singer’s stories of hope, heartbreak, drama and daydreams. Girls Behind the Rock Show connected with her to talk about her career goals and dreams, as well as her new single, Empty Promises.
How did you get started in music and how did you find your sound?
My love for music developed at a very young age. One of my favorite things to do as a young child was sing and perform for my family. My mom recognized my interests in music and in elementary school got me involved in musical theater and a children’s choir. When I was 12 years old I began recording music in a studio each week and later began posting covers to my Youtube and Instagram. I eventually started performing at local coffee shops, county fairs and festivals. I began writing my original music and in 2019 released my debut single "Heartache". I think I naturally found my sound as I started writing music. With that being said, I think my sound is continuing to evolve with each new song I write and produce.
Who would you consider to be your top 5 influences or inspirations?
I would consider my top five influences to be Taylor Swift, Nina Nesbitt, Madison Beer, Bea Miller and Gracie Abrams. I really admire Taylor's storytelling and her ability to paint such a descriptive picture in her songs. Elements of her music and style definitely inspire me in my own songwriting and sound. I really admire Nina Nesbitt's songwriting as well. I think she's super creative and has a great voice. Madison Beer is an amazing singer, and I'm in love with the melodies she creates. Bea Miller and Gracie Abrams influence my music as well.
What’s the story behind your new single?
The concept of Empty Promises was born from a situation in my life that greatly affected me. I felt that I had been let down many times when someone promised me something but never followed through. It was upsetting, and I wrote the song to help me make sense of what I was feeling.
How would you say that your music has evolved from when you started to where you are now? Are there any topics you’d love to explore that you haven’t yet?
I think my music continues to evolve. I started seriously writing music when I was 14 years old and as I get older, I think my writing naturally evolves as I experience new situations and challenges. I feel like I can write about more mature concepts and tap into different emotions. I also think each time I go through the production process I learn from it and incorporate any new insights into future songs.
I usually write songs that are inspired from my own life, either what is impacting me directly or what I observe around me. I have been thinking of exploring the topic of injustice. This year (2020) has been eye opening in many ways, and I would love to write about what I have seen and how it is impacting me. It’s a very important topic, and I’m still thinking about how best to approach it.
What’s been the most fulfilling part of your music career so far?
It's always so fulfilling when someone tells me they can resonate with my songs. It's such a beautiful feeling to know my music that once helped me cope through my own situations can connect with someone else and help them through their own situations.
What are your goals when it comes to music? Where would you love to be a few years from now?
Some of my short term goals are to increase my fanbase and to get my music heard by more people. I would love to perform at larger venues, once things start opening up again. I would also love to collaborate with other songwriters and artists. In several years my goal is to be a well known artist with a North American and European tour.
Every artist has a different relationship with music- how it’s affected their lives, how it moves and inspires them, etc. How would you describe your relationship with music and how does that relationship drive your desire to keep creating?
Music is everything to me, it lives in my heart and soul. When I'm dealing with a situation in my life I go to songwriting to help process my feelings. I've grown up with a love and passion for singing and performing and it’s that passion within me that drives and motivates me to continue pursuing what I love to do.
The world has been in some degree of lockdown for a while now. How are you staying creative and productive in these strange slow times?
I’ve been doing a lot of journaling and reflecting. I have been writing songs, which I find to be therapeutic. I also started working out on a more regular basis, which I really enjoy and it helps reduce my stress. Life has definitely been a little strange so I've been trying to spend time doing things I love and enjoy.
Are you hoping to play more shows/tour when it’s safe to do so? Who would you love to be on tour with in the future?
Yes, absolutely! I can't wait to get back performing. I would love to tour with some of my favorite artists, such as Gracie Abrams, Charlotte Lawrence, Madison Beer... that would be a dream come true.
Is there anything you would love to be able to talk about more that you may not often get asked about?
I haven't been asked about what advice I would give to my younger self. If I were to answer it I would tell my younger self (and myself today at times) to not get too caught up and worried about what other people think. I would tell myself to focus on what makes me happy and not compare myself to others. It's easier said than done but I think this is super important to remember and can probably apply to a lot of girls in general.
