💕 what's your favorite part of your writing process?
Oh, definitely when I can just let the ideas flow in real time. I don't do a ton of planning when I write, so while I usually have an idea of the start and the end a lot of the middle is fuzzy. Sometimes that can be immensely frustrating, but sometimes it's really great to just imagine straight onto the page, as it were. It can take me (and the story) in some really fantastic directions!

Just because you enjoyed writing a section doesn't mean it actually serves the story. Be a little more judicious with your cuts!

Ah, thank you for the ask, @shywalkers :) You have made my inbox very much less empty xD Anyway, uh, here we go:
A: How did you come up with the title to (If Anything, It Was Unexpected):
Ahaha, uhhh, disclaimer: coming up with titles is the bane of my existence, and I consider myself to be pretty…pretty awful at it. This one took a while and I still don’t know if it’s any good but, heh, it is what my brain wanted I guess. So, I sort of came up with it because Loki is basically…unpredictable. To other characters, at least. In this fic he’s sort of…unhappily doing some self-sacrifice stuff, begrudgingly cooperating, and… basically surprising himself with his actions, as well as all the other characters, who pretty much expect the worst from him, (this includes Loki). So, whenever other characters seem to be affected by his actions ( i.e. the itty bit of Heimdall’s development I’ve been working on) Loki is like: ?????? He doesn’t expect anything he ever does to actually change the opinions of the people around him, he doesn’t expect anyone to actually care about him or think about going back for him (why would they, he’s a monster, isn’t he?) But every time they do…it’s unexpected. For him. And, as we saw in IW, and basically in TDW…Loki believes his death is basically expected. It’s inevitable. He’s been living on borrowed time since Odin picked him up on Jotunheim. He’s the monster in the story who has to eventually be slain, and to die for Thor, for his people, well, it’s not like he wants to, but if he didn’t….if he lived instead, well, that’s just...unthinkable.
TL;DR: Everything Loki does is unexpected to the other characters who expect the worst from him (including himself), and every time the other characters respond more positively to him in light of his actions, he is completely confused and distrustful of it because of So Many Angsty Reasons. And…that’s basically what I wanted to explore throughout this fic. Hope this sort of makes sense…
Even More TL;DR: Even though I don’t think I’m a suspenseful writer who surprises readers at all, all the characters are surprising each other and it’s sad.
Or Alternatively: My updates are so sporadic, every time I post a new chapter, it’s unexpected. Specifically to me. I need to…I need to get better at this……

If Anything, It Was Unexpected - Chapter 1
“And mother-?” The words broke on his tongue, and Loki wished he were not under Odin’s scrutiny.
“She misses you,” Odin said quietly, gently, and Loki couldn’t meet his gaze, “she says she is proud, and only regrets she could not be here herself.”
Something cold wrapped its icy fingers around Loki’s heart, and squeezed.
“I…” Loki choked, but forced the words from his lips, fighting against the sob threatening to tear from his throat, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please tell her I’m sorry. ”
And, same chapter:
“You-” Loki gulped, blinking furiously as Odin wiped away the last of his tears, “you left us. You lied, ” he couldn’t bite his tongue, couldn’t hold it all back, “you left us with a sister you threw away and the fires of Ragnarok. ” Loki gasped, and clenched his teeth against a sob. Because that’s what you do with things that embarrass you. That are wrong. You imprison them, lock them away to be forgotten. “You lie, you’ve always lied, and they called me the God of Lies.”
You tell him, Loki. You tell him. (I like them because they make me sad (what does that say about me), but also, the second one is…yeah. Odin is compliqué, but…this spiel, I feel, is accurate, and I’m happy I gave Loki the chance to say it.)

1. Lise, or to find her on tumblr, @veliseraptor - all her stuff is amazing, she has Loki characterization (and whumping) down to an art form. I admire all her stuff. Life in Reverse is probably my favourite loki fic ever, and if you haven’t read her stuff yet, please give it a whirl.
2. bereft-of-frogs, or @bereft-of-frogs - love all her stuff too, more Loki fic, beautiful characterization, please check her out, you will not be disappointed. pain, and other human sensations , as well as its sequel and side fics, have a special place in my heart.
3. GalaxyThreads - I don’t know if they have a tumblr, but all their stuff is amazing, I particularly love Append (exploration of Loki, Thor and Hela if they grew up together) it’s honestly beautiful, and I believe it has a sequel. Please check her out on Ao3.

Hey, @shywalkers , thank you for the ask! :) Alright, let’s do this...
1. What are your favourite whump tropes?
How?? Do I choose??? There are?? So many??? UHhhhhhh...Here we go, I guess, I like these all sort of equally but:
Good old fashioned torture. (This can vary. It can be medical torture, or other types.) Can be a kidnapping situation, but if the whumping happens in the character’s home, that is....their safe place is no longer their safe place and it is saaaaaddd. But good. Even better if torture gradually gets worse and more creative. (I prefer long-term captivity, but in a range of months or weeks. Not as much years or days.)
Kidnapping scenarios where it takes a while for anyone to notice but after a while, there are one or two people who are like Something Is Up.
Dehumanization. This can easily get too OOC for me or too weird and creepy for me...but generally, if it’s done right (I know that’s subjective but anyway), where the torturer has drilled it into the whumpee’s head that they deserve this and stuff, it can be very good (and sad.) (This is especially great if this stuff isn’t immediately noticeable to the other characters but is Gradually or Dramatically Revealed and everyone is like What is Happening I Don’t Know How to Handle This Situation WTF?? (With varying levels of homicidal tendencies towards the whumper.)
Psychological effects that linger, even if the physical stuff is all healed up (but chronic stuff is good too.) Nightmares, random regression in behaviour and recovery, panicking, ptsd, new phobias, the list goes onnnn-
Scar reveals. I know, it’s.....just, if the character is embarrassed by their scars but another character walks in on them while they’re in full sight, or if they’re revealed in the process of other characters tearing off their shirt or something in their hurry to treat a very serious current wound but then more are hidden underneath...it can get very interesting and angsty and the possibilities-
Caregivers who are generally at a loss but are Trying(TM) and don’t give up.
Other characters’ perceptions of the whumpee are changed (for the better.) But there are other characters who remain assholes and the whumpee is Defended.
Generally I like a lot of stuff and we would be here all day if I listed them all but overall...I need the h/c at the end. If there’s only straight whump and it ends hopelessly I just.....NO. (Ironically, this is way easier to write than to read, and can even be enjoyable. BUT NOT TO READ THANK YOU.)

4. Do you prefer physical whump or emotional/psychological whump?
Aaaaahhhh these two go hand in hand imo. Start with physical, and explore all the psychological and emotional stuff that comes with it, and how it doesn’t all magically go away. (Also inserting mind games is fun too while you’re at it.)
6. What are the traits of your ideal whumpee?
Baaaasicallyyyy any of my favourite characters, which...seem to be the loner type, the one who doesn’t quite fit in anywhere (so they don’t think they’ll be rescueeeddd even if they do have people who care about them by the time the whumping comes around, but unfortunately they’re so unused to the idea of anyone actually caring about anything happening to them that then they’re surprised if they do get rescued, or if they escape by themselves, and people care, and they’re like ???? ) They’re usually snarky at the start and for a long while, they’re pretty resilient, but at the same time kind of like This is Fine Everything is Fine while also like Well I Guess This is It Then while also holding out for a very long time, and not completely breaking to the point of oocness but still breaking a lot. I want to...add more but...then we would be here all day so... (examples of my favourite whumpees include Loki, Theon Greyjoy (mostly book but also show), Zuko, Nebula, Lupin, Number Five, Lucifer Morningstar, Varian, Crowley, and many many others......) Am I ashamed? ......no.....maybe........
7. What are the traits of your ideal whumper?
Uhhhh....smart. Can effectively wield mind games like nobody’s business, are pretty sadistic too though, do have blind spots and weaknesses, but aren’t too sympathetic. I...it gets kind of squicky for me if I’m supposed to empathize with only the whumper and not the whumpee, or if I’m supposed to see the whumper as “the strong, intelligent badass” and the whumpee as “completely pathetic”. No thank you. So, I usually want to be able to dislike the whumper, but also be creeped out by them, and for them to be at an equal or higher standing with the whumpee in terms of intelligence (this can vary, also, they can be intelligent in some areas, while also have incredible moronic energy in others. It is always great when the whumpee can finally outsmart them, but I want that to be a challenge). Physical strength, while I prefer it to be more overpowering, it doesn’t really matter that much if the whumpee can’t go anywhere. This is...weird, anyway.......
