You worked on Borderlands? I'm immensely impressed. I'm curious, too. How did you get involved or rather, how do you even go about getting involved with writing for telltales and just writing video games in general? I've decided that's what I want to do with my life and any advise would be super appreciated!

Ah well thanks! I’ve been working at Telltale Games for 2.5ish years now - The Walking Dead: Season 2 was my first writing assignment, then Tales from the Borderlands, and now I’m on Minecraft: Story Mode. Writing for games is a funny field with people bringing their experience from all over. At Telltale our writing team includes novelists, playwrights, TV writers, indie filmmakers… Personally, I wrote for animated movies and cartoons in my pre-Telltale career, but I’ve always been a huge video game enthusiast. (Here’s a little blog post about my career path in general)It sounds like cliched advice, but honestly the best thing you can do to get a job writing for games is to start making games of your own - Before Telltale I had been a hobbyist game maker making games in a free program called Adventure Game Studio. (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/) It’s dead simple, barely requires any programming, and I just stol–err, utilized graphics from other games on the internet. Another amazing tool is Adventure Creator - Sort of the same thing but a little more modernized. (http://www.adventurecreator.org/)When I applied at Telltale I had some of these little games to show and it was a great talking point. Understanding how games are put together and figuring out what makes them fun are fundamental skills to have for writing in games - You’re going to be working with people from all different disciplines and need to understand how to communicate with people outside your own field. That’s the reason a lot of games critics have transitioned into writing for games - they have the knowledge and language of games and can speak critically about them. Look at the video games you like, figure out why you like them, what you would improve and, just as importantly, look at the aspects you don’t like and figure out why you don’t like them - That sort of critical thinking ability is absolutely vital to being in games.

So… There’s a little bit of advice I guess? I am definitely no expert and still learning every single day on the job, but that’s how I landed here anyway!
