It’s not quite the same as it used to be. He’d thought, once, that he and Meryl might have something in between them. Something that could be beautiful if given enough time. But when they touch each other some months into that first year, halting and fumbling, Vash finds that whatever it was had wilted and died.

He supposes it’s the grief, and he and Meryl never speak of it again.
