At the Enekjaer Hostel
It was a normal night at the hostel. After a lot of hard work, Sandra had received funding for improvements, so she was taking some much needed time off before setting to work on the building.
Jessie still felt lonely without his friends at the orphanage, however he was starting to make friends with Ben. Sandra was always friendly and he was glad to have a warm bed and accommodation while he made plans for his future.
Ben on the other hand, loved the hostel and was grateful to have his own space away from his rickety old hut or his friends’ sofas. He had started to gain some weight and his cravings were easier to manage. He missed Asala, but knew that she was a bad influence, so he tried to push her to the back of his mind as he enjoyed life for the first time,
“Your referral mentions a history of substance misuse. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but where are you with that currently?” She asked.
“I would have been six months clean...”He sighed, “but it was hard over Christmas...my friends were great, but they didn’t want their six year old around a junkie! I slipped up once at New Year, so I’m back to three months I guess.”
A small part of Sandra’s brain was telling her not to approve the contract, but she could sympathise. Christmas was a hard time for a lot of people, especially away from their families. One slip up in six months wasn’t a terrible record.
“No one is perfect. I operate a zero tolerance policy on drugs here, but if you find yourself feeling tempted or think you’re in trouble, please talk to me! I know these things are hard.” She smiled.
“It won’t happen again. I’m done with it all. I just wish that everyone else saw that too.”
Sandra’s second boarder arrived in the form of Ben Kraus. Given his record, she had some concerns, but tried not to let it affect her initial judgement of him. She made him a hot chocolate and sat with him as he signed his contract.
A side-effect of Jessie’s low mood was a sharp increase in cookies in the hostel; Jessie loved to bake and comfort eat to make himself feel better.
Christmas started early the following morning. Chris, Archer, Arun and Devon made their way over and they all opened presents together before sitting down to eat lunch together. (Arun was hiding in the kitchen)
The Christmas tree...yup that Christmas tree, the main part of the decorations...had to be moved to accommodate the present pile, but hey, it worked eventually!
Arun was incredibly thankful that nothing in the costume chest fitted him. The thought of his girlfriend finding out about his turn as a scary pink dinosaur terrified him. Seeing their son’s impending doom, Chris and Archer took pity on him and they said their goodbyes and got ready to go home for the night.
“It’s Christmas, Ben. You let me stay with you when I first moved over here. Let me talk to Gillian.” “Really? You’re the best man!” “I can’t promise anything, but stay here!”
