SYDNEY: A sell-off in produce stocks has sent the Australian stocks reeling, following quick drop in the oil value and fears about a Greek exit from the euro zone. London's leading share index ended flat on Monday as traders stood on the sidelines ahead of a crunch meeting of the US Federal Reserve and a looming independence referendum in Scotland. The benchmark FTSE 100 index slipped 0.04 percent to 6,804.21 points, with the pound nearing 10-month lows against the dollar amid fears Scots could vote "Yes" to split from the United Kingdom in Thursday's poll. "Equity markets spent much of the session in negative territory as renewed risk aversion among investors in the run-up to the Scottish referendum and the (US Fed) meeting meant many investors steered clear of risk assets," said Sucden Research analyst Kash Kamal. "Furthermore a referendum on Scottish independence taking place this Thursday... is increasingly sowing uncertainty and consequently keeping investors out of stocks," said Markus Huber, senior analyst at broker Peregrine & Black. London shares slipped on Monday as traders booked profits while anxiety over Scotland's potential breakaway from the United Kingdom sent the pound tumbling to a multi-month low against the dollar. The benchmark FTSE 100 fell 0.30 percent to end at 6,834.77 points. "Financial markets got a wake-up call this morning to the potential fall-out from a 'yes' vote at the Scottish independence referendum in 10 days' time," said Michael Hewson, chief analyst at CMC Markets UK. "The pound has slid sharply on the currency markets while the FTSE 100 has also come under pressure as companies with a significant Scottish presence have seen their shares prices slide." London's leading index ended higher on Thursday, cheered by hints the US Federal Reserve could raise interest rates sooner than expected in view of US growth, despite mixed eurozone data. The benchmark FTSE 100 added 0.33 percent to close at 6,777.66 points. Minutes from the July 29-30 Fed meeting showed policy makers increasingly at odds over how strong the US labour market is and what that means for inflation -- a key issue in planning rate rises next year. The intensifying debate signalled an increased, albeit still measured, level of hawkish sentiment in the Fed that could speed up any rate rise, dealers said. Source: AFP

London shares closed higher on Wednesday, shrugging off concerns about Ukraine on the back of positive earnings and a rise in Wall Street. The benchmark FTSE 100 ended up 0.65 percent compared to Tuesday's closing level, at 6,584.17 points. "The return of risk appetite comes in spite of the persistent worries about the escalating situation in the Ukraine," said Ishaq Siddiqi, a market analyst at ETX Capital. "The situation in Ukraine, although worrying as its fluid, is being put aside by financial markets who are now focused on the better China data for inspiration to snap up assets at lower levels," he added.
