At the same time that I was making the filing pin for my GRS benchmate system, I also made this small vise attachment. I started with a little cast iron adjustable vise that I had used for years. It was one of those that had the rubber suction base that stuck it to the tabletop, but the suction base never did hold all that well, and anyway the rubber had rotted some time ago.

I began by cutting the base off of the vise. Cast iron can be difficult to cut, I used a diamond blade in a reciprocating saw. I then turned the end down on a section of tube, so that it would fit into the vise body, and brazed it together on the inside of the body. I made the mount from 1/8” steel plate and another section of tube brazed together, and brazed on a lug for the threaded hole. This plate was painted in black crinkle paint.

I stripped and refinished the rest of the vise parts, and assembled it all. After years of struggling with vises that slide around, I finally have an adjustable vise that stays put when I use it, I like it!

After years of making do with various jury rigged bench pins for sawing small work, I recently purchased a GRS Benchmate bench pin for my work bench. It is part of an ingenious system of work holding fixtures that are slotted onto a dovetailed mounting plate on the work bench, so that they can be easily removed and changed. Although I am very happy with the sawing bench pin, I also wanted a filing and sanding pin. Since GRS doesn’t make one, I made my own. I made the pin holder of 1/8” steel plate, that I cut and brazed into the finished part. I finished it in black crinkle paint, a finish that I have wanted to try on something for a while. I like the old fashioned look of crinkle paint, and it matches the finish on the GRS bench pin. I then made a hardwood insert that is held in place by two screws on the bottom. I also made a steel backing plate for the GRS dovetail plate, as I needed to raise up the mount by 1/8” so that it would clear my bench drawers.
