Bender thought that he'd made himself abundantly clear when it came to you.
In all the time that you two had spent together, he told you just how much he enjoyed you every time he got the chance. It was just the way you made him feel, and that was new for him.
John had never felt like that before.
He couldn’t even go a few minutes without pointing out all of the things he found attractive about you or making sexual jokes at the expense of your body.
It seemed like all he wanted to do.
...But you didn’t pay him mind for a second.
In all the time that you had attended the same school, he had never shown any interest in a woman like you. You knew well enough to know that sort of thing didn’t change overnight.
Not only that, but it had never happened.
John Bender had never dated a girl even close to your size and that was more than enough for you to be unsure about what he was doing. He wouldn’t be the first guy to flirt with you as a joke.
As best you knew, you’d show up to some kind of date with him and the entire basketball team would be there to laugh at you.
To you, there was absolutely no reason that Bender should have been attracted to you after only ever dating rail thin, traditionally beautiful girls, and women that you had nothing in common with.
You couldn’t have been farther away from his type, but Bender really didn’t seem to care.
The arrangement you two had was simple.
Your english teacher had commissioned you to help tutor the man, due to the incredibly high likelihood of his failing. He wasn’t going to be able to graduate if he didn’t pass, but he wasn’t going to be able to do it alone.
That was what he needed you for in the first place. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t the top of your class. At least as far as your english teacher was concerned, no one else was more qualified to help him with this than you.
Not that knowing that made it easier.
If Bender had just kept his mouth shut and let you teach him what he needed to know without hitting on you every six seconds, you never would have had a problem.
It would have been easy.
...But that wasn’t what happened.
Instead, Bender decided that out of everyone else that he could have hit on and flirted with, he picked you. There was just something about you, something that he couldn’t shake.
When he stopped to think about it, Bender knew the truth. He felt something for you that he’d never felt before and it was strange.
He couldn’t put his finger on what it was specifically, but he was really attracted to you, in a deeper way than normal.
Bender was the kind of guy who didn’t really fall in love at all. If anything, he’d hook up with girls at parties or stuff, when he was bored, but never more than that.
It just wasn’t something he ever wanted to do.
However, that all changed when he met you. For some reason, the more time he spent with you, the more infatuated he was. You just interested him in a way that most people didn’t.
Everything about you was interesting to him, and no amount of time was enough.
Clearly, because when you got ready to go home after his tutor session, he stopped you. Bender wasn’t ready to let you go just yet, “Hey, you wanna go to the movies with me?” he asked, shocking you.
There was a casualness in the way he asked, and it physically stopped you in your tracks. It was much more than what he’d ever done before when he called you hot.
This was a real ask.
Bender had just asked you out on a date, and that was something you had not seen coming when you got up today.
“What?” you repeated, trying to make sure that you hadn’t just heard what you wanted to hear. You liked Bender, of course you did, but you didn’t want to be naive.
He was never going to be interested in you. Even now, standing where you were, you were sure of that.
“Do you want to go to the movies with me?” Bender hummed, repeating his earlier words with a huge grin on his face. He had so much confidence and so much passion, it was almost hard to deny him.
However, you’d been in these situations before, where you were sure someone was into you and then been proven very wrong. You just didn’t want to get hurt.
...and right now, Bender was in a position to really hurt you.
“Why would you want to go out with me? We don’t have anything in common” you sighed, looking around his bedroom. There was a Led Zeppelin poster on his wall, covering a hole in the drywall and a bin of records on the floor.
You just had so much about your lives that were different and you didn’t know how much of that you could get over. Besides, you still hadn’t addressed the biggest concern you had.
“Who cares? I like spending time with you” he started, but you had to stop him before he continued. You’d heard this a million times before and he was driving you crazy.
If this was all just a game, he needed to just get over it now.
“Come on Bender, we both know that you don’t. Guys like you, don’t like girls like me” you scoffed, it really wasn't his fault but you were just tired of being treated like this.
You just wanted someone to care about you for who you were. It was what you deserved, and if he couldn’t give you that, then you didn’t need to keep standing here.
It wasn’t right.
“Guys like me? What does that mean?” he asked, still thinking about what was wrong with what he was doing. From where he was sitting, all he knew was that he liked you and wanted to go see a movie.
It shouldn’t have been that big of a deal but what he didn’t understand was how many times you’d dealt with jerks who were cruel to you.
They were never just in it for the right reasons, it was never just because they cared about you.
“I don’t know, hot guys, cool guys...guys like you” you huffed, sitting back down on his bed with a sigh. You had no idea what you wanted him to say, or what you expected, but it just hurt.
You didn’t have anything to say other than that.
When it all boiled down, there was no avoiding the truth, you were scared. You didn’t want to take the chance of Bender hurting you, or something bad happening.
You wouldn’t be able to handle that, not with how much you cared about him.
“There are no guys like me, trust me” he smiled, after a moment or so in silence. Bender was just trying to figure out what you needed to hear right now but eventually, he settled on that.
Without missing a beat, he reached out to take your hand in his own slowly. Neither of you really knew what you were doing, but decided to roll with it anyway.
After what you’d just done, you were surprised he’d ever let you stay in his room at all. Anyone else would have sent you away because you were acting crazy.
You didn’t know anyone else who would do what he was.
“So, do you want to go to a movie with me?” he repeated, a small smirk on his face as he looked at you. You wanted to, of course, and as worried as you were about it, you had to admit it sounded nice.
If nothing else, it would be easier to do than study Shakespeare.
“I’d love to see a movie with you, John” you decided finally, hoping the two of you could just have a good time.
