The Great Kingdom of Benin
The Benin Bronzes are thousands of13th–19th century brass/bronze sculptures, plaques, and ivory items created in the Kingdom of Benin (modern-day Nigeria). In February 1897, British forces looted these treasures from the Royal Palace during a "punitive expedition," a violent invasion that burned Benin City and exiled the Oba (King) to dismantle local trade monopolies.
Key Aspects of the Looting and Legacy:
Destruction & Theft: British troops destroyed the city and seized thousands of artifacts, which were brought to the UK, with many sold to cover the costs of the expedition.
Global Distribution: The stolen items were sold to museums and private collectors worldwide, with the largest collections ending up in the British Museum (approx. 900+), as well as institutions in Germany and the USA.
Repatriation Movement: For decades, Nigeria has demanded the return of these items, leading to recent, ongoing, and successful repatriations from museums in Germany, the UK, and the US.
These items are considered vital cultural heritage, representing the history of the Benin kingdom.
