PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go on for an hour about how bad they are ive literally never seen anyone talk about this and i would LOVE to hear a fellow synesthete's rant!! (this is abt ur tags on whiteout vs benjamin btw)
Whiteout and Ben are often protrayed in the light of being "stupid" for having synesthesia, with Ben just being dumb and Whiteout not talking "right"
It's protrayed as a negative thing. Whiteout's brain is shown as thinking in colors that are too confusing to be mind read and while yeah, some people do think in colors, the majority of people with synesthesia do NOT.
Y'know what traits she does show? Autistic ones!! So much that HALF THE FANDOM thinks she has genuine autism.
The author, tui t sutherland, mentioned that she didn't want to write about a trans dragon without knowing that much about the trans experience. And then she goes and vomits up the garbage mess that is Whiteout and smiles cutely! I don't think she even did research!
And another thing- she doesn't get to make her own choices. She and another dragon, Thoughtful, are at a party. Thoughtful is talking to someone who has a crush on him, called Listener, and a dragon who can see the future, Clearsight, realizes that Thoughtful and Listener could make it work. She also sees that Whiteout and Thoughtful could be in a much happier relationship, and without asking either of them what they think, changes both of their futures permanently.
Also Whiteout's father gets brutally murderered, and her mother and brother are both presumed dead. That's how the book- the ONLY book with her in it ends.
(Also Clearsight is a colonizer and single-handedly changes a continent's language, and fucks so hard and severe that an entire tribe of dragons splits into two, one with black scales from her and one without. Genetics in those books are messed up. And she kinda causes a queen to attempt genocide)
And now for Ben!! The protyal of synesthesia in those books is just messed up. Ben is seen as rather stupid, and apparently has every type of synesthesia as once. It's also the same type of synesthesia (same colors when smelling something) as the two twins who have it, Dr. D and the magician. This is a plot relevant thing. This is also incredibly inaccurate.
I'd rant more about that, but it's been a while since I read the books and Whiteout is a more important side character, who I've ranted very much about already.
Glob and Daniel-Not-Danielle have a group chat figuring out what in the world is going in with Cass, Yo-Yoji, and Max-Ernest.
Who else is in it? Benjamin Blake, though he knows slightly what the fuck is happening with those three and just stay there for the theories
COME VOTE FOR THE WORST REPRESENTATION OF SYNESTHESIA I'VE EVER SEEN!

Benjamin: Well you know what? Pain makes you a better person. And uh-
Harry: Is that true? I think it just hurts.
