Did Ben know Ladybird before their phobia developed? Are phobias so overwhelming that he would undergo the procedure with a stranger at the time?

Ladybird and Ben had not met prior to Ladybird becoming stage 4.

Ben had to go through several evaluations, meetings, and one-on-one discussions before the procedure, but the procedure itself is very invasive and no part can be reversed.

Chris only became a Timorvas himself after an incident at the hospital where Ben was getting his surgery, and now Chris also has to deal with Ladybird as a roommate while they're integrated with Ben.

Also brothers are just like that sometimes lol

What exactly was ben’s motivation for such a... complicated surgery/relationship. Could ladybird not exist as a 4.5 on their own?

Getting the attachment surgery means that both Ben and Ladybird’s stage progress would be stalled.

Ladybird being a 4.5 is dangerously close to losing all cognitive and physical control, but still far enough away from their human body to be able to seamlessly share one.

With Ben and Ladybird together, they get their relief easier and it lasts longer. Kind of like a gastric bypass surgery for the Phobias.
