Pep Guardiola continued to stand shoulder to shoulder with Bernardo Silva over his tweet storm. But he said that the Manchester City star has learned his lesson from the incident, and that he will not repeat his mistaken joke. The Blues midfielder sent a message on Twitter to his close friend Benjamin Mendy which compared a picture of his friend as a child with a caricature used to promote a snack in Spain. That brought a welter of criticism, accusations of racism and an invitation from the FA for the club to give its observations on the matter. Guardiola defended Bernardo on Tuesday night, which led to criticism of the manager as well. But Guardiola was unrepentant, insisting that Bernardo’s intention was not bad, and that factor was the most important when judging what he did. And he compared it to the racist abuse suffered by Raheem Sterling and other black players in recent years. To follow Stuart on Twitter, click here. Regarding Bernardo I was incredibly clear,” said Guardiola today. “If the people believe Bernardo is this type of person they are completely wrong. They judge one joke – I judge three years with him. “Bernardo, or anyone else in my squad, do these things for a joke. Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo, that is what I see every single day here.” When it was pointed out that Bernardo had subsequently deleted the tweet, which may be seen as a realisation that he had made a mistake, Guardiola said: “We judge intentions and I know the intention of Bernardo. Maybe I don’t want to be involved in that and delete it. I know all of them. Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy are close friends (Image: Getty Images) “It was just a joke. Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo. It is the same the other way. It is what I see every day in training.” Guardiola was also asked if he understood why some people might be upset by the tweet. “If someone is affected or feels bad about that tweet or any comments, it can happen,” he said. “People judging Bernardo don’t know him. He is an exceptional person, exceptional. He likes to be involved in different situations. “Focus on other issues, not Bernardo. It was just a joke. The same happened a thousand times with white people. It was a cartoon. If people think it’s the opposite then Bernardo and City are open. “It happened many times and you have to condemn. Fight for it. What happened in the stadiums. READ MORE “Skin colour, where you were born, you feel better than the other, is ridiculous. I was born in Catalonia because my mum and dad were there. “I speak for myself. I don’t think I’m something special because of my colour of my position. I’ve understood that for a long time. “Bernardo too, I spoke many times with him over three years. Put the focus on other things, not Bernardo. “If someone is offended I can understand it. Bernardo is maybe going to take a lesson and it won’t happen again.” Source link The post Man City boss Pep Guardiola again defends Bernardo Silva in Twitter storm appeared first on 10z Soccer. #BernardoSilva #PepGuardiola #BenjaminMendy
Pep Guardiola hopes Benjamin Mendy can help Manchester City’s push for silverware this season. The French defender, having missed most of last season with injury, has not started a league game since November 11 after suffering more setbacks. While he is in contention to play at Fulham , the manager warned that the shape of the team will not simply be changed to accommodate him and there are enough doubts over his future for the club to be trying to sign a left-back this summer. Guardiola does think that City can see the player that Mendy has shown glimpses of – he has five Premier league assists this season despite his long absences – but believes it will take time before he is back to his best. “If he has consistency – two months, three months, no injury – he will come back without a problem,” the manager said. “But if he comes back, then comes back again three months later, then two weeks, then three months, no. READ MORE “Most important is a week’s training, day-by-day, and if that happens with a good reaction in the knee, of course he will come back. “I think the physicality is not a big problem. It’s more what we want to do, what we’re looking for, the spaces, the rhythm and the pace. Sometimes you need time when you don’t play but I don’t have doubts. He knew he needed more in his knee. “He’s a strong guy but he needs power to sustain his efforts. He’s getting better but he needs more time. “He’s here in Manchester to play football and when he can’t play he’s a little bit sad. But the body needs time after two big injuries, the second one as well. We are optimistic he will help us between now and the end of the season.” READ MORE Source link The post Man City coach Pep Guardiola gives update on Benjamin Mendy fitness appeared first on 10z Soccer. #BenjaminMendy #PepGuardiola #ManchesterCityFC
Manchester derbies are the type of games that require someone to step up and seize proceedings and, over the years, this fixture has blessed us with scenes that will be talked about forever. In the past, an 18-year-old Marcus Rashford has been that player – scoring on just his eighth start for Manchester United to win in 2016; Mario Balotelli prompted both outrage and applause for Manchester City with his infamous ‘Why Always Me’ celebration as he opened the scoring in 2011; Wayne Rooney scoredthat bicycle kick eight months earlier… the list goes on and on. These sparkling moments of individual inspiration are what have characterised these clashes over the years but, as the tide decisively begins to shift between the two Manchester factions, it was a team-effort that wrote the headlines. Pep Guardiola’s City machine is made up of many interchangeable cogs that, such is the fluidity and precision of their football, can be deployed just about anywhere on the pitch without looking out of place – it is this which allowed the Cityzens to thread a 44-pass move together to kill off the Red Devils in the last ten minutes of the game on Sunday. It’s a tall order to pick a standout in a side that both operates so effectively as a unit and boasts so much individual talent, but Bernardo Silva has more than capably filled the boots of the injured Kevin De Bruyne and has arguably been the Sky Blues’ most consistent performer this campaign as they (somehow) continue to build on the record-breaking form of last season. The former Monaco man has been shifted inside to complete a midfield three and, since, you could be forgiven for forgetting that there is a certain ginger magician who fills that spot usually. While quickly forming an impressive partnership with David Silva, the 24-year-old is providing a defensive security which his Spanish namesake does not, completing 1.3 tackles per game and 0.9 clearances to the 32-year-old’s 0.8 and 0.3, respectively (WhoScored). As Guardiola’s system allows the two midfielders ahead of his regista to roam freely, the £54m man has the license to wander into advanced areas and his excellent positioning and vision have allowed him to chalk up three goals and three assists in the league so far. This excellent output at both ends of the pitch makes him as close to expendable as is possible with the wealth of stars vying for starting spots so expect Leroy Sane to suffer when De Bruyne returns to the fore. The German has seen his minutes reduced due to the arrival of Riyad Mahrez and the mind-boggling logistics behind Pep’s reluctance to start him with full-back Benjamin Mendy; as both are left-footed, the concern is that their respective movements and runs will be be too similar and that they will only get in each-other’s way as they attempt to unpick their opposition. Raheem Sterling has benefitted greatly from being swapped over to the left as he now has the option to cut inside onto his favoured right foot, as is the objective for the left-footed Mahrez, who has taken up Sterling’s role on the right. With De Bruyne expected to be fully match fit for the trip to Chelsea on 8th December, he will likely slot back into the midfield three and push Bernardo Silva further afield to his natural right-winger slot. Pep seemingly doesn’t rate Sane on the right as he does Mahrez, so the PFA Young Player of the Year may slip further down the pecking order if the relationship between he and Mendy cannot be worked around – the pair have played together only twice all season. It would be a great shame to see the 22-year-old starved of minutes for such a technical reason that is far out of his control, but there seems to be no other conclusion come the Christmas period if Silva keeps up this form. #MarcusRashford #ManchesterCity #BenjaminMendy

Manchester City Dominant, Arsenal Go Missing : Three Talking Points
Alosh K Jose In what was the first heavyweight match of the Premier League this season, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City schooled a post-Arsene Wenger Arsenal. The reigning champions won the game 2-0 after goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernando Silva and responded perfectly to that emphatic win Liverpool secured earlier in the day . Here are the three thoughts from the game. 1. Manchester City's Desire to Win Still There Analyzing the Community Shield game between Arsenal and Man City, we had noted that there is no let off in their desire to be the best. Guardiola's men looks to be spurred on by the fact that nobody since a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Manchester United have defended their title. They seem desperate to repeat their cross-city rivals' heroics.
Pep Guardiola's infectious spirit and desire has seen Man City be hungrier than ever. That much was evident from the Arsenal clash as City always held the Gunners at an arms' length. Yes, some of the passes towards the end did not find their targets as the City players seemed tired. But overall, it was a good game against a top-four contender. In his post-match interview Guardiola said that the desire of the City players are as strong as last year. It seems to be that really is the case. Pep Guardiola's teams do not rest on their laurels. And Manchester City is certainly Guardiola's team. 2. Arsenal Need Time It was strange to see an Arsenal technical area without Arsene Wenger. Despite not leaving Emirates with the trophy-laden send off the Frenchman craves, hi shadow is all over Arsenal. It must be in that context Unai Emery's beginning of reign must be studied.
New manager Unai Emery must be given time to put his ideas across. Unai Emery fielded his team after properly studying the City team, unlike Wenger who used to send out his team in one single way, no matter the opponent. That itself is a good start for the Gunners, to have a coach who understands how the opposition plays and reacts to it. Emery's Arsenal tries to press high up the field and play balls out from the back. More often than not, they were not successful in that. Manchester City smartly evaded the press and forced Peter Cech to kick longer sooner rather than later. The nervousness Arsenal players showed when employing Emery's tactics show, how much more work is needed to pull this side up from the Wenger era. His laissez-faire attitude towards training ground work had made these Arsenal players soft. It is extremely difficult to shake them towards more competitiveness within a fortnight. Emery needs more time. 3. City Evolves with the Signing of Riyad Mahrez and the Return of Mendy In our preview of Manchester City, we had noted the diverse ways of using Mahrez to create different problems to the opposition. Looks like Pep Gaurdiola is a fan of our blog as he used both Mahrez and Sterling as inverted wingers, allowing Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy to overlap frequently in the wings.
Benjamin Mendy provided two very different kinds of assists to show the tactical variety of this Manchester City side. This tactic is in contrast with hat Guardiola used last season where he chose to stretch the defence using natural wingers to open up space for Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva to work thier magic. With both of them not included in the starting eleven, the Spanish master tactician went the opposite way to include two inverted wingers and using the full backs to really stretch the field. Coupled with Benjamin Mendy's ability to both cut inside and overlap, City has an array of tactical options to confuse their opponents with. The Arsenal midfield and defence were caught out due to this tactics as it was clear Unai Emery had come for the wrong exam with his playbook. This tactical versatility makes Man City even more unpredictable in the final third and thus even more dangerous. Rivals, better watch out. Read the full article
