There was an urgency within each and every single one of her movements; from the way she dashed back into her little office, the quick flipping of pages, the hurried glances as she scanned the page in front of her. There was also a frustration, clear and evident, so heavy that it filled the air around her and the space within the office to a point that Emmeline wouldn’t even have noticed if someone would have entered the room or spoken to her. Too focused on the task at hand, it seemed as though nothing else would matter. And truthfully, that day it did not.
The witch usually didn’t allow for things to become so dramatic, nor did she allow herself to lose her cool. Any other day or week she would have been found at her desk, pondering over tomes and ancient texts for clues in a calmer, collected manner with not a hint of stress displayed on her face yet circumstance left no room for such a tame approach on the matter. It wasn’t the first time and surely wouldn’t be the last time that an object at work would become something of interest for the Order and yet this felt different. Perhaps it was the fact that Emmeline found herself so closely connected to it – this item held far too many answers for them all. Yet days had gone by little to no progress, and it had caused the witch to become agitated enough to consider other means to crack the case. Surely no one would ask if she adjusted the report on the matter.
But it wasn’t all that simple. It never was. What had started as a normal day was meant to go dark the very moment she muttered the spell, the few words she hoped would help crack the curse, break it down until it was nothing more than a faint memory. Dark magic used on dark magic, fighting fire with fire. Just what exactly had she thought would happen? The very moment the spell connected with the object it bounced back as though hit with a beater’s bat and equally as potent as that. Emmeline let out a yelp when she felt it connect back with her, wand ripped from her hand. She watched it fly halfway across the room before feeling the pain from her hand radiate up her arm with a searing intensity. Her other hand moved to hold her arm where the pain seemed to come from. It wasn’t the first time a spell had backfired, but it was a new thing to find herself seeing the dark magic used do what usually only the harmless jinxes had done thus far. Yet nothing shocked her as much the figure standing in the door. Benjy. How long had the other been there? “Just wanted to test a new spell. Guess that was the wrong one.” Emmeline was beyond desperate to play it down, despite everything. She couldn’t get caught using magic like that.
The Order needed this. It was worth it. All that was left was hoping Benjy hadn't seen too much.
