Growing Up
Emmeline was born to Ismelda and Alusius Vance on a late fall night in 1959; a creature of the night from the beginning. A half-blood due to her motherโs muggle heritage, from an early age on she had to live with the struggles that came with the frowns of others upon her fatherโs choice to give up five generations of pureblood status for a woman that, in their eyes, was so much lesser than them. Not at all leading a secluded life, many occasions and celebrations - of the few they were invited to - held hostility toward them and it caused the child to wonder: Just why did everyone dislike her mother? What was so different about her. It was with time that she would learn the views of the world around her. While of course not everyone felt hatred toward those considered impure, there were enough that made the little girl question if perhaps her mother truly was in the wrong. Always closer to her father, Emmeline kept her distance from the woman that had given not only life but also the judgement of the world to her.
It became very clear early on that Emmelineโs father had underestimated the backlash of his choice, as to a degree he still very much believed in certain ideals and even insisted his child be raised accordingly with proper education; etiquette and early studies of the wizarding world, the history of magic, the value of it all. Surely his one misstep would not be messing with the view of the world. On the other side, Ismelda Vance became very aware of the choice she had made upon marrying the man next to her. As time passed she grew bitter, only fueling the twisted view her own daughter had of her. Emmeline didnโt grow to love her own mother, only ever seeing her as the cause for issues and prejudice. At a time where very few people seemed to correct such thoughts, the girl was left to her own devices, hatred festering against only one of her parents.
Despite all that, she grew up to be a curious child, bordering on demanding when it came to acquiring new knowledge. There was a hint of hunger for power. Emmeline was sure one day sheโd show them all just what she was capable of, no matter what circumstances.
Start of the War
When the letter finally arrived, after years of anticipating it, Emmeline left her home behind with fresh curiosity, bursting with a need to prove herself as nothing less than her fatherโs daughter. And then she left, letter in hand and ready to embark on an adventure that deviated her so very far from her already estranged mother. The hat wasted no time and sorted the girl into Slytherin. For the very first time in her life Emmeline felt loyalty toward someone other than her father. Still, the day her fatherโs letter came was rough. In her second year she was informed that her mother had fallen ill and that her return home was required. It wasnโt long then, her mother passed in front of her eyes. Gone was the woman the girl wasnโt sure how to connect with; a fairy tale like nightmare that only left her with more confusion. But down in the dungeons was were Emmy felt at home and that was were she left that confusion, buried it and allowed it to grow into contempt. Not understanding what had killed her mother, Emmeline - so far from home - only felt a growing disdain for the person that had abandoned her. And not once did she consider thinking of it differently. After all those closest to her now were her friends and their view on the matter was clear and oddly logical to the girl.
Years passed, loyalty growing. This was were here friends were and somehow she got along with them, perhaps, at times even understood their views. Her mother was different and in the end it had killed her. It had to be wrong to a degree, right? So it came that with each year she would spend less time going home, eventually only spending the summers back in the cold, lonely manor. Some days Emmeline would run from it all, instead enjoying her time her fellow Slytherins as the whispers of conflict grew beyond the walls of Hogwarts. Of course, she didnโt go about without noticing it but it wasnโt until the near-end of her seventh year that Emmeline bothered to consider an option other than following those sheโd considered her friends and family; those she considered to be right.
A determined young woman, about to embark on a career at the ministry, her world was shattered when words of her fatherโs passing reached her. Rumor had it that it was payback for the mistakes he had made. After all that time it seemed his choice had finally caught up with him. It threw Emmeline out of balance, caused her to question the world around her. It was as though from one moment to the next the witch was forced to walk through a world filled with ice water, slow and painful yet all the more confusing for it.
She graduated and immediately dropped the idea of going into the genealogy department at the ministry, too confused to consider the idea. With her penchant for the dark arts and her interest ever growing, she instead went to become a cursebreaker. Here she felt at home, within the halls of the ministry. Occasionally an odd job for Gringotts. But her inner turmoil was only growing until eventually, following the whispers she found herself standing in front of Dumbledore. The witch was desperate for a solution, anyone that would explain why suddenly the world didnโt seem so clear anymore but also with an evident fire - the anger over the injustice of her fatherโs death - looming over her. She asked for help and he provided, giving her both a chance to be herself and have a different view of life all together for the very first time.
Of course, there were those who considered her addition to the Order an odd choice, many of those who had witnessed her at school rather skeptical about Emmeline Vance suddenly being there to fight along side them and yet so she did, every day, fighting harder, taking her missions in stride and clearing whatever needed to be cleared. It was her fatherโs death that pushed her into the arms of those she, once upon a time, would never have considered to be part of and yet it fit, it made sense. It felt right.
It wasnโt until the Battle of Birmingham that Emmeline found herself confronted with her biggest fear; the reality sheโd pushed very far down the moment sheโd joined in on the fight. The battle was a mess and yet within the confines of an alley way her eyes connected with someone else, recognition on both their faces. It was a reminder of who she had been; who she still was very much, deep down. In shock she had found herself cursing out loud, telling them to leave as she couldnโt bring it upon herself to do anything.
Present Time
Emmeline has settled entirely in her job at the ministry, using it as means of dealing with the curses and hexes that once interested her so much. Her work for the Order continues, although she is making sure that no one other than those within the Order know of her involvement in the matter. With her past still haunting her, it feels best to keep things quiet.
Lately it has become harder and harder, having to face many more of the well known faces of the past. Despite that she keeps working, keeps fighting but fears what may happen if the wrong person comes along. After the situation in Birmingham, Emmeline had spent months upon months noting down everything she knew, every little detail that could give clues as to who else may be hiding within those ranks. It is something she keeps locked behind charms and protective spells, hidden from the Order itself as she fears to be seen as a traitor if one would ever learn of what she is hiding.
Sheโs still fighting for control, both inside and out.
