The first scene I put down for between reach and grasp was the scene with Brooke sitting alone at the bar. I really wanted the first chapter to reflect how solitary she is so that Vanessa could come in and bulldoze all of that, so I wanted to get her by herself and get a feel for her loneliness. I knew that I had a lot to say about Brooke and Katya together because that’s a dynamic I am extremely obsessed with, so I wanted to understand Brooke by herself first before I brought in anybody else.
