Chamber Music America Announces 2011 Grants

     This past week, Chamber Music America announced the recipients of it's $285,000 funding project to support the production of new and adventurous music projects.  Receipients included French pianist Benoit Delbecq, guitarist David Gilmore (not the guitarist from Pink Floyd), Brooklyn based pianist Fred Hersch, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh.  Each recipient formed a plan to compose new music in a way that was somehow new or unique.  Each performance or recording will somehow include either unique inspirations, be presented through a new medium, or include rare combinations of instruments.  To read about the individual recipients and their projects, visit this page.

Kartet - The Bay Window

Kartet is another band which showcases the piano work of Benoit Delbecq.  Though this record is not new, it seems to be unheard of in many jazz circles.  This French quartet is infusing traditional African drum influences, polyrhythms, and modern composition with some of the aesthetics of modern American jazz.  This album can be hard to get in the US, but Amazon is always a good source.

Benoit Delbecq Trio - The Sixth Jump

Benoit Delbecq's The Sixth Jump received very little attention from critics in 2010.  However, Delbecq was the pianist on John Hebert's Spiritual Lover, which made many top 10 lists for several critics.  Benoit Delbecq's style seems to include influences such as Lennie Tristano, Charles Ives, and Bill Evans.  The compositions on this album are full of sounds from free jazz and 20th century classical music.  Despite these sometimes chaotic elements, the percussion work of Emile Biyenda is usually distinctive enough for listeners to keep track of the form.  Delbecq is one of the most unique pianists in jazz today.
