Pianist Fred Hersch began his jazz career in the closet, but nearly 30 years ago, when people in the jazz world were afraid to come out, he identified himself as gay and HIV positive. Nine years ago he spent several weeks in a medically-induced coma; later he wrote songs inspired by his coma dreams. His memoir is Good Things Happen Slowly. Listen.

Premiere: Watch a Full Performance of Fred Hersch's Coma Dreams
Fred Hersch is no stranger to the experience of living through a coma. Indeed, he thought about his experience so exhaustively that he composed a piece about his two-month medically induced coma. He's divulged elements of this experience in his highly recommendable book, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz. Soon, he'll be making a filmed performance available on YouTube, but thanks to WBGO, you can watch it now. If there were ever a time for us to ponder that unearthly world, wouldn't our pandemic age seem to qualify?
