Noise

After being awake for almost 24 hours to get here, I feel deranged and fall into the bed at my new home for the next few weeks. I wake up, suddenly, at 5am, sweating, to an Islamic call to prayer, also known as the Adhan, booming from a nearby mosque.

And it's not a man with a megaphone, it's pretty much a full on PA system. And it will happen again four more times. Noise control doesn't really exist here so I just lie there in the dark, listening, like I have a choice. It is actually quite ethereal (check out this). Not all noise is like this in India however, particularly here in Bengaluru where the drivers of buses, cars, scooters and auto-rickshaws love to honk madly at each other, all day and all night.

Noise is such a problem, it is called noise pollution, a term you rarely hear used in New Zealand.

Indian researchers say there is a need for public health action because its harmful effects - hearing loss, psychological disturbances and tinnitus - are only noticed when it becomes severe. But it is overshadowed by air and water pollution.

My flatmate says I'll get used to it, and I hope I do. Although, there are always earplugs.

Benson Town. It looks quiet here but it ain't.
