It's Chap Goh Meh and I have to work and miss out on the traditional dinner so I made a modernised version of a Nyonya dish/snack called pie tee/pai tee/top hat, where you painstakingly deep fry the shells one by one because the mold only ever comes in just, well one.
The traditional filling involves carrots jicama or turnips cooked together with optional shrimp, dried fried shrimp and some do green beans as well.
Well, my cousin made the shells this year and we've finished an entire container of the traditional filling already (at fucking last) so I went with smoked salmon with unsweetened yogurt on a bed carrots and edamame, and spicy fried potatoes with havarti and some carrots (one carrot is a lot okay?).
Oh, and some dark chocolate just to keep the compartments from rattling around.
When it comes to the Halo universe, is there a reason why the species names like Sangheili, Unggoy, Lekgolo, etc. are capitalized, while "human" isn't?
It affects more science fiction franchises than just Halo, including two pillars of the genre...
Wookie, Duros, Zabrak, Twi’lek... human
Vulcan, Klingon, Ferengi, Bajoran... human
...and Hugo and Nebula award winners like Benti by Nnedi Okorafor who is a terrific author and I love her short stories and you should read Benti; it’s not that long and it’s such a fresh take on sci fi because of the protagonist’s/author’s perspective and please please please read it
I don’t have a definitive answer for you on why, but my initial thought is that it helps identify the New Word to the reader, the same way a non-English word might be italicized. It lets the reader know that this word means something outside the bounds of our everyday English speaking.
And, of course, that comes from the perspective of an English speaker in which nouns are not capitalized unless they are proper nouns, which is not true of all languages.
