Lady Sings the Blues by Billie Holiday

Lady Sings the Blues is a tell-all memoir, written with the help of William Dufty, sifting through Holiday’s life where she reportedly doesn’t tell all. It’s hard to believe she pulled any punches, given the honesty and detail of her addiction and the racism and persecution she suffers at seemingly every turn. She is kinder to others though. Her mother gets off lightly for long periods of neglect. Lester Young is another lifelong favourite.

You might turn to Lady Sings the Blues for facts, as a historical record of the 30s and 40s jazz scene in the States, which it is, but that isn’t the point. The point, of course, is the voice.

William Dufty nails what it must have been like to kick back with Holiday in a smoky room, share a few cocktails (apparently not champagne) and chat. If this book is anything to go by, she was not only her generation’s supreme stage performer, but she was also one its great talkers, and myth makers.

Reading this book, you get the impression that Holiday regaled William Dufty exhaustively with story after story and it was left to him to form a cohesive narrative. Which of course he does, and all without losing the voice of Holiday, which sings through the prose. Dufty may have shaped it, but this is undoubtedly Holiday’s book, Holiday’s voice, and that’s why it’s still read today. Why it should always be read: because she was one of the best to have ever done it, and I’m sure she had a say in the final edit – but perhaps I’m falling into the trap here of belittling Holiday’s contribution. Something which plagued her all through her music career.

She was always more than just a voice. Routinely denied writing credits on songs for both music and lyrics, not only was she the voice of a generation, famous for her phrasing and improvisation, but Holiday was also a natural arranger of music and a gifted lyricist. She was a real artist in ever sense of the term.

Her race and sex went against her, a strong tone of condescension in the label of ‘natural musician’ jars the modern reader. A practically lifelong dependence on drugs, and endless legal tangles with the FBI (she was banned from performing in her hometown of New York for most of her career), also make for tough reading. Never did this brutal treatment shake her belief in herself, though it did add a strong flavour of resentment.

It'll be no surprise then to learn that the book is also, wonderfully, full of slights and petty grievances. She has no qualms dishing on all who crossed her path throughout her career. This is the juiciest of indulgences to enjoy and a pleasure to read.

There are many reasons to read Lady Sings the Blues, but for me it’s a memoir that, through the strength of the narrative voice and pacing, transcends the form and attains the level of literature.

Pile 2 - I see either you or a partner has been struggling with addictions for a while. Most possibly alcohol, could be something else too but with Temperance I feel it's mostly connected to drinking. I have a feeling for the majority of you the one struggling is a masculine. I see it's been a long and painful road making it out but you've made it together. I see one party has helped the other with their addiction by talking to them, possibly physically stopping them from taking their dose also. They've tried everything possibly to help their person with the addiction. They've done all the research to be prepared for the fight. I see the person who's struggling is coping currently, they're in a better mindset, successfully saying ''NO'' to what they've been abusing in the past. I see they're still being tempted sometimes but they haven't stopped working on their discipline, so far having their victory over the addiction. I see love truly helping this person and I have to tell you they're so thankful you're in their life. They're doing it for you, sunshine. They know how much you love them. Their love for you is as pure as a kid's love, they remember all the fun times together with you and they'd hate to lose you. You're the only one they've taken down their walls for, you've seen their real, vulnerable side. The lovers came out for you guys, your union is true and if you've helped each other get through an addiction, then you'll get through all life's hardships successfully. You're a divine union, believe it's blessed and sacred.

Pile 3 - I see you've been dealing with someone who's a runner. They're scared of getting into a real connection and would much rather keep their true emotions and personality hidden. They've got the reputation of a serial dater - a player. Perhaps they've shut you off numerous times. They've turned off genuine connections, they'd much rather keep things surface based. I see you don't think that way about them, your opinion of them is quite pure. You believe other people's opinions aren't true for your person. You've been defending them in front of others. “When do you and your person realize that you love each other?”

Hello! I’ve prepared this PAC for the full moon, but it passed my timezone already so I’m hoping I manage to get this one up in time for everyone else on the other side of the world ahehe. I ended up doing more cards than I realized! When I was taking photos of the spreads, I was wondering why I was having a hard time getting a good shot, then I realized, “Oh, I took more cards than usual.” It’s all good though, it’s just funny that it happened. Anyway, I also wanted to put this out so I can focus more on a plate I have to do, so there’s that.

Lastly, let me take this time to remind you that this is a general reading, so please only take what resonates. Nothing is ever really set in stone, and tarot involves reading the current energies that are being channeled! At this time, you’re doing well in life. You’re successful and you deserve it! But there’s just one little problem: you have some unfinished business with something… or someone from your past. An ex? This was a toxic, parasitic relationship, and you want nothing to do with this person, but they won’t budge. Maybe you’ll end up doubting yourself too and think, “Well… maybe…” The answer is no. You broke up for a reason. Listen to your gut and don’t let that person coax you into taking them back! Besides, you have a lot of work to do on yourself before you can get into an actual, proper relationship. You must change for the better so this doesn’t happen again. When you make a mistake, whether it’s at work or in a relationship, acknowledge it. Apologize and do better, you can do it. You can be more stable and responsible. Maybe you have a bit of a temper sometimes, so meditation is important. Perhaps your person could also help soften you up with this. They could be your cheerleader! I feel like at this time, your person will be having insecurities when it comes to their career. You’re having a hard time at this moment. Perhaps you could be dealing with some mental health issues, and you’re struggling to the point where you’ve decided to seek help. Aside from this, you also need a good support system! *coughs* them, aside from your other loved ones, of course. Either way, you need to surround yourself with people who are smart, logical and helpful. For your person especially, I feel like they’ll be really curious and want to do all they can to help you out with your problems. Things will get better, you will get better! Perhaps you’ll have a hard time realizing or remembering that, and your person will be there to remind you of all those things. Going through this process of healing, you’ll learn to protect your peace, and your person will be more than happy to help you with doing that should you need it! Perhaps at this time you will need to cut ties with toxic people in your life, and you might have a hard time doing it right away, but rest assured that they’ll help you if they find you struggling. At the end of everything, at the end of all the hurt, you’ll look back and be proud of yourself for all the progress you’ve made. All the hardships and success has led you to this turning point in your life, and you’ll get to enjoy it even more once you look at them and realize, “Oh, I really, really love this person.”

Okay, your person….. has a lot to work on. They have a lot to correct with themselves and the things that they do. They are successful, yes, but they’re not perfect and they have a bit of an ego. Me saying “a bit” is an understatement, honestly. They seem fiery and bold, and while they may have good intentions, it doesn’t help that it doesn’t come across that way. They also seem to care a little too much about what other people think. You are also quite successful, and everyone who sees you thinks that you have it all figured out, but you really don’t. You’re tired, and you overcompensate because you feel as if your worth lies in your work or whatever it is that you can bring to the relationship. You’ve overworked yourself and it’s starting to show. Capricorn Venus and Lilith in the second house vibes. Both of you are not in the best place at the moment. I really do feel like one has not been very appreciative, while the other has just been giving and giving because they’ll feel useless otherwise.

You two need to take some time to step back. They need to correct their shortcomings in this relationship, and they’ll try. Oh, they’ll try so hard so they can be kinder, more patient, more appreciative. They’ll do their best to stop caring so much about what other people think and instead focus on what you think. After all, it’s the two of you who are in the relationship, not them. They will get better, they will do better.
