Bent Shapes - 86'd In '03
New LP on Slumberland Records coming March 2016!
Nearly a year ago, we were holed up in The Soul Shop in Medford, MA during a blizzard. That weekend we recorded the bulk of what would become our sophomore album with Elio DeLuca (Titus Andronicus). Now that record, which we had such a good time making, and of which we are extremely proud, has been mastered by TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion), and will be released by one of our favorite labels of all time, Slumberland Records on March 11th (311 was an inside job). Jessi from Father/Daughter is helping us with PR, too, rounding out a true dream team for this release.
The record is called Wolves of Want, and you can hear the first single, “New Starts in Old Dominion” over here. Read more about the record and our 2016 plans on our new website, where you’ll find news, show listings, music, and other media from now on. This Tumblr will be kept as an archive of our pre-2016 antics, but will likely not be updated going forward.
Thanks y’all! See you at the GIGS.
TONIGHT in a haus TOMORROW at a beer fest
What a weekend!
Tonight we’re at The Womb w/ Brazil, The Dingo Babies, Non, and Hello Darkness.
Tomorrow we play a craft beer fest named after legendary American hero and noted eco-terrorist Johnny Appleseed.
I can’t wait!
We did a Spare Room Session with Fitz Ross Productions a couple months back and it debuted today over on Allston Pudding. It features a live performance of a song called “New Starts in Old Dominion” from our upcoming second record.
Bent Shapes recording LP #2 this week!
Tonight Bent Shapes begins recording our second LP with Elio DeLuca at the Soul Shop!
What I am most excited about is that we are setting some boundaries for ourselves for this record. I feel as though most people get excited about having endless possibilities in the studio, but I prefer having a finite set of choices.
For example, we are recording to 16 track 1” tape, purely analog. While I like analog sounding recordings, I’m by no means a “purist” and wasn’t necessarily seeking out a studio that stayed clear of digital technology. I am more excited by the fact that we only have 16 tracks and we are, once again, working with an experienced engineer. I don’t like many mics on my drums and I tend to prefer more minimal guitars; in fact, I usually hate doubled rhythm track guitars (but I do love Jeff Lynne). I think our method of recording this way will lend itself to these preferences.
I am very excited to work with Elio as well. He recorded Stephen Konrads and his band Eternals and that’s what originally had me considering the Soul Shop. Originally, Ben and I were looking at more “punk rock” studios: cheap day rates, simple production. Many of these recordings had lots of open hi-hats, LOUD in the mix.
Stephen’s music is very different than Bent Shapes, but I thought that it would be exciting to realize this LP with someone who tends to record a slightly different style. It’s kind of like Bill Szymczyk and the Eagles: Bill didn’t record bands like the Eagles (well, he technically didn’t record bands at all, he worked in the Navy), but he was able to get the exact sounds they wanted, better than Glyn Johns could (and Glyn helped define their sound!).
Our goal is to work through 10 songs over the next 5 days, recording everything from drums, bass, guitars, vocals, keys, and maybe even a stringed instrument or trumpet (time permitting).
IT'S BEEN YEARS NOW, I'M CALLING OFF THE SEARCH FOR MYSELF
BUT WHAT ARE THE CRITICS SAYING??
HEY: since "86'd in '03" debuted on Vanyaland a couple weeks back, a few folks have sent us some pretty thoughtful live and recorded reviews, Improper Bostonian did a feature that included an update on us, and Skatterbrain put us on a killer installment of their (his?) monthly mix w/ Terry Malts, Joanna Gruesome, Fleabite, and Literature! More clips and links are below.
Many thanks for listening + sharing with yr friends. Real talk: getting yr songs heard is tough w/o agents + PR and that stuff--getting on the big-name review sites usually takes money and/or connections (we done seen that shit play out). The fact that people like the new tracks + have been passing them around means a lot to us!
