“Her Pyhtas slogon Berht ealdorman” [John Earle 1865 Two of the Saxon Chronicles Parallel, 1st edition, page 43, annal (E) 699]: “Here the Picts slew Berht aldorman” (Edward Gomme 1909 The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, page 36, annal 699 [E]): is the same annal as “Berctred dux regius Nordanhymbrorum a Pictis interfectus” [Joseph Stevenson 1838 Venerabilis Bedæ Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum page 419] (“Berthred, the royal commander of the Northumbrians, was slain by the Picts” [John Giles 1845 The Ecclesiastical History of the English Nation, page 338]).

Usage:

A man called Berht supposedly witnessed a charter issued by Osfrith (called Offa for short), King of Mercia, in 772: “✠ Berht” [Walter Birch 1883-1893 Cartularium Saxonicum 1: 296 (number 208)] (but the sole surviving copy of this charter has been so badly miscopied that the phrase “tota scira” [all the shire] has been turned into two witnesses: “✠ Tota ✠ Scira”: most likely “Cyne” and “Berht” in the same list were originally one witness).
