Berena drabble, G, no warnings. Bernie is tired after a long shift at the hospital and just wants some caffeine to wake up before the Christmas visitors arrive...
Bernie stares in dismay at the kettle on the countertop.
It's been minutes already and the water still isn't boiling.
"It's broken." She whines at Serena who enters the kitchen.
"You know you can still boil water on the stove, right?" Serena asks, quite amused by her caffeine deprived girlfriend.
Bernie gives her a look of pure betrayal. "Too slow!"
"Well, then I suppose you'll have to eat coffee beans."
"Betrayed, by the kettle and my own girlfriend," Bernie sighs. "And after working the Christmas nightshift!"
"Oh, go sit down, I'll boil you some water, love." Serena kisses her cheek.

Meanwhile, Serena has just unwittingly bought the last ones at the market right before Bernie can ask for some - but of course, Serena is willing to help out a fellow mother of a difficult teenage daughter! That Bernie is nice to look at doesn't hurt, either...

Summary: Serena wants to spend some quality time together with both her girlfriend and her daughter, and is taking them out to the Christmas market for the afternoon. While Elinor still likes to cause some trouble, it goes better than Serena would have expected.
A ficlet for @berenaadvent day 1: prompt ‘matchmaker’! Just a little scene from the idea the prompt gave me, but I think it works as a standalone- and who knows, maybe I’ll be able to continue it with later prompts!

“Oh! Well, you know I have no problem with, um, gay people right?” Serena says, feeling caught off guard and trying not to show it. She is glad her daughter felt comfortable coming out to her, especially with how rocky their family relations have been at times, and she doesn’t want to mess this up. “My colleague Bernie is a lesbian, and her daughter Charlotte is, what is the other word, pan-sexual I believe? And there’s-”
“Mom, you don’t have to start listing all the gay people you know just to prove what a great ally you are,” Elinor groans, rolling her eyes. “I know you’re cool about it or I wouldn’t have said anything.”
“Right.” Serena awkwardly shifts from one foot to the other. “Well. Uh, does your father…?”
“Hell no.” Elinor just shakes her head. “And you’re not gonna tell him, I still want to get a free ticket to that cruise he’s going on with Libby.”
“Right.” Serena is a little perplexed by that rather pragmatic outlook - she isn’t sure she could’ve voluntarily spent time with her own parents if they had been homophonic and she - well, it’s not like she is a lesbian, so she supposes the point is moot. “You don’t need to worry, it’s not like we ever speak anyway.”
“I figured. Hey, you mentioned your colleague’s daughter is queer too?”
“Oh, now you are interested in who I know after all?” Serena laughs. “Yes, and she is your age - and single, last I heard.”
“Ugh, mo-om! I don’t need you to play matchmaker for me, I don’t even want to date right now. But she probably knows more about what’s going on in town, she’s from here isn’t she?”
“Yes, though she studies somewhere else… but she should be in town at the moment, I remember Bernie mentioning a visit - do you want me to ask if they’d like to meet up?”
“Sure, arrange a playdate for us,” Elinor rolls her eyes, but she is also smiling, so Serena counts it as a win.

Everybody lives, and everybody is gay, just the way I like it! If I continue it it’ll of course be Berena endgame ;)
