Inktober day 3: crown
I immediately starting singing Billie Eilish's "You should see me in a crown" and since Katse has grabbed that as hir theme song, here I go trying to create the image in my head.
Someday I'll get there.
Berg Katse from Gatchaman and DECREASE THE INCREASE (Baron Ashura from Mazinger Z)
Profiles in Villainy
Zoltar
Berg Katse was created by the alien entity known as Sōsai X so to act as the leader of the terrorist organization called Galactor. Berg was tasked with marshaling the forces of Galactor in an effort to conquer and subjugate the entire planet.
Berg is a mutant entity created through the genetic fusion of a pair of fraternal twins while they were still in the womb. As a composite being, Berg possess greatly enhanced strength, speed and intellect. An odd byproduct of the process that created Berg causes him to alternate biological sexes on a roughly annual basis. Berg identifies as male and he has hid his alternating physical sex under a uniform and mask.
As the leader of Galactor, answering only to Sōsai X, Berg regularly matched wits with the Gatchaman Science Ninja Team (or G-Force). G-Force has been able to thwart Berg’s dastardly schemes yet they have never been able to apprehend him as Berg manages to always slip away at the last moment.
Actors Mikio Terashima and Hiroko Mori provided the voice for Berg Katse in the original anime series. In the English language dub, where Berg is renamed ‘Zoltar,’ actor Keye Luke provided the character’s voice. The Villain first appeared in the debut episode of Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman, airing on October 1st, 1972.
Currently trying to resume work on the next installment of Gatchaman Eternal (before another 7 months passes me by…). It’s been very relaxing to play with these characters again: recently I finished writing out Gel Sadra’s origin story, and it was so much fun I immediately drew these pictures to go with it.
I think Gel (or as they’re known at this point in the story, Sami Pandora) is my favorite antagonist to write; they just have so much emotional depth, which usually manifests as this impulsive ruthlessness that makes them a perfect kid-villain. When I initially wrote their section of the script, I thought maybe it was a little too cartoonish how fast Sosai X decided to recruit them…but then I thought, y’know, if I was an evil alien who came across a 16-year-old genius who mods weapons and isn’t afraid to kill people and has the guts to mouth off to a dude who threatens to crush their skull with a bear claw-- AND, has obvious mommy issues that I could probably exploit later-- I’d be pretty eager to get them on my side, too. ^^;

Another of my enduring loves! Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets. In case you don’t know what they are they are basically the same series but made to be very different. The original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman which was deemed a bit too violent for western children was adapted by Sandy Frank Entertainment and renamed Battle of the Planets. With all the cuts they had to add in some kid friendly scenes and characters of their own but the series still stood up! Both versions are great as is the updated OVA version. I’m not going to get right into the whole thing, I just want to give some love for my favourite character Zoltar (Battle of the Planets) aka Berg Katse (SNTG) aka Solaris (Gatchaman OVA).
(Zoltar)
Zoltar (Berg Katse) was the right hand man of the main bad guy (a space alien or space computer depending on which version you watch) and leader of Spectra. He was able to shift from male to female at will.
(Mala Latroz)
The female side of Zoltar was explained away in BOTP by the invention of a sister Mala Latroz (which is an anagram of Zoltar).
(Solaris)
The character is hard to explain unless sticking to just one version of the series, but I like them all so couldn’t leave any out. Basically Zoltar/Berg is an experiment (hence having the ability to change sex) and Solaris is an ancient alien (who can also change from male to female but this is natural for him/her). Zoltar/Berg are cunning, devious and brutal but basically nothing goes right for them. In BOTP Zoltar is kind of a sad character and a bit of a joke at times. Solaris, in the updated OVA is far more cold and calculating and takes great pleasure in his work. Like I said, taking all versions into consideration it’s a bit complicated. BOTP was great as a kid, but SNTG and the OVA are best. If you haven’t seen them and like weird futuristic alien threat stuff you should give them a go!
