BLOMUPDATE
Bergenia purpurascens (purple bergenia)
I took these photos last summer in a friend's garden. We have a Bergenia crassifolia in the back garden but this year it experienced total failure to bloom - not a single flower - nada.
I've always regarded this as a lazy guy's, low-care garden flower. It grows in crevices in the Himalayan Mountains (up to 15,000 feet) and is noted for it's hardiness, easily surviving -30 F in the winter. It prefers a moist soil but about the only way to screw it up is to over-fertilize it (and none of the plants in my garden would accuse me of that sin).
So why didn't our decade old Bergenia flower? After a few minutes of scrolling garden blogs I think I've found the likely answer. This clump forming perennial can become 'over-crowded' and needs to be divided up every so often and given a little fresh soil. It sounds like I might have a bit of shovel work to do.
