Berkeley isn’t just a college town; it’s a state of mind. Birthplace of the 1960s Free Speech Movement and the farm-to-table revolution, this Bay Area city has always known who they are and stood up for what they believe in. And lucky for travelers, inclusivity is in their DNA, and they are ready to welcome you, no matter where you come from. We’ve always been curious about this free-spirited city, so it was finally time we made it over the Golden Gate Bridge for a few days. We loved that Telegraph Ave, still has the Summer of Love hippy vibe, with bookshops, record stores, and tie-dye art vendors. That music venues like Freight have been going strong as a nonprofit for 57 years, bringing diverse bands to the stage and music education to Bay Area schools. We loved that in Berkeley, vegan food isn’t just a veggie burger, it’s plant-based sushi, Reuben sandwiches, and food at its most creative and cruelty-free. We expected Berkeley to have plenty of culture, but what we didn’t expect from this urban area was its great outdoors. It’s a part of the largest regional park district in the country, with 120,000 acres to play in! We hiked Tilden Park through the redwoods and a canyon of laurels to a secret lake. We kayaked the San Francisco Bay and realized how close we were to the big city, all while feeling closer to nature. Not gonna lie, we didn’t really think of Berkeley as a vacation destination, but between its legacy of social good, sustainable cuisine, and everyone-is-welcome ethos, it’s exactly where we wanted to be! @visitberkeley
