“The Tale of Despereaux” at Berkeley Rep
One of my favorite things is when a theatre company pulls off spectacular effects with simple techniques. And though there was clearly a healthy budget for the staging of this musical from PigPen Theatre Co., it still has a homespun feel that is beyond charming.
Though I found the drama a little less than compelling (adapting a novel into a play is a mighty challenge), pretty much everything else was spot on, especially the music from the onstage band. You and the kids will love it.
