“you do not require my permission to visit the imperial gardens, you know. they are nearly as much yours as they are mine at this point.” dressed down in jodhpurs and shirtsleeves, hair pulled back in a simple braid, her face — almost — obscured by the wide brim of a hat, she might almost be mistaken for someone else, were her bearing not so unmistakably regal… and her appearance not so striking. back pin-straight, posture tight, arms crossed, she is still ever the emperor; yet without the weight of the regalia, there is something lighter in her stance still.
“and apart from that…” gently, with gloved hands — dark gloves, meant for gardening, rather than her usual white ones — she cuts a red rose from the rose trellis, carefully pruning away the thorns, before extending it to other woman, a wry smile upon her lips. “…hubert’s staff are the only ones who will tend your plants. it seems the garden staff find them frightening.”
war had been long and draining for all parties involved . it had felt hopeless , for a very long time . until finally , it was over . they were free of the shackles of violence and death . bernadetta was free to write , to draw , to plant and just live a peaceful life . away from her father . away from those who would hurt her .
while being in edelgard’s presence did not startle her anymore , she did not expect her to be there as she lingered by the garden’s gate . bernadetta made a little eep and glanced sheepishly at her and took the trimmed rose .
“ th - they’re only frightening to those who are not willing to learn about them , ” bernadetta mumbled , scuffing her feet . “ they are really quite sweet , they’re just looking to survive just as any other plant . ”
