The Rescue- from Comix Reader 3
Buddleia
How can such slender roots
Penetrate brick and stone?
These flowers of the floating world
Seem not to mind such inhospitability
Nor miss a gardener’s care
Desired or not
Admired or not
They grow anyway
How disarranged our arrangements
When fallen to disuse
The buddleia seems to claim
It was always their place -
Where buildings crumble
And blue skies open
Mad Man At Kenwood House
Bristling with antennae
I take the deliveries
To my stationary colleagues
And pass on the warning
From control:
The strange young man is back
He’s been sighted in the grounds
The past fortnight
And wanders into the museum each day
Not looking at the paintings by Rembrandt or Vermeer -
Not admiring the Adams fireplace or the ornamented architraves -
Nor the walnut chest of drawers, with its satinwood inlays -
But goes into every room
Trying the handles on all the doors, methodically
And with a sense of purpose
There’s no reason to be alarmed
Or excited (alas)
He isn’t dangerous
In fact, he seems almost sane
Only holding one world in his mind
As he navigates another
(I sympathise)
He just comes in
Opens and shuts and
Opens and shuts doors for a while
Then stops and stands blank-faced in the centre of a room
Peers through a few windows
Inspects the view
Then re-enters it
Toy Kitchen - A nightmare
Figure skaters (1995)
Friday night was spent at home Watching the finals Of the Women's Figure Skating Championships
Smoking fags and drinking beer While on screen Triple Twists and Double Toe Loops are attempted.
Ladies from the Eastern Bloc America and Orient - Darlings of Diplomacy - Though cool on the ice, Flail and thaw once off it:
Bawling with their bouquets held like babies, While coaches proud and solid In their nylon sportswear Play husband to triumph and disappointment With consummate equanimity.
Surround sound cranks out Classical favourites: Romantic, bombastic Quivers and quavers
While these ladies With gelled hair And spangly leotards Draw patterns in the air and ice
Grinning through the tough bits That furnish judged requirements
And they do seem lonely there As though this is where Their lives are lived:
Sad princesses entirely -
Giving and enduring all For beauty and for winning
Controlling momentum, Defying gravity Making it look easy For those who sit and watch.
Me against the sea wall.
Winter trees.
