One of the things I love about older picture books is their dedication to the classical narrative arc, with interesting characters, adventures, and a clear beginning, climax and ending. This contrasts with a lot of more recent books that I've seen, about which one niece said to me rather memorably, "There's not much story to this story, is there?" 😂 🐊🐊🐊 Well, there's certainly plenty of story in Bernard Waber's classic "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" (1965). The second book in this series about the sweet, city-dwelling reptile, it is the first real adventure of Lyle's after his introduction in "The House on East 88th Street" (1962). Lyle Crocodile is a favourite character who will undoubtedly pop up here again in future. But for today I wanted to share the very first, very best Lyle book. It's in Bernard Waber's "The House on East 88th Street" (1962) that we first meet the Primms, and watch as they discover the performing alligator living in their new house, who will become a beloved member of their family--well, once the initial alarm has passed!!
