The Scottish Hebrides - known as Innse Gall in Gaelic and Suðreyjar in Old Norse - are divided into the Inner Hebrides (roughly 40 islands, including Staffa, Colonsay, and Islay above) and the Outer Hebrides (15 islands, including the Bernera Islands and the St. Kilda archipelago above), and lie off the west coast of Scotland. Long inhabited (probably 9,000 years or so, if not longer), the islands have borne the brunt of invasion by the Celts, the Norsemen (as part of the Kingdom of the Isles), the English, etc. Of course, the Hebrides are firmly in Scotland, and as such officially use the Royal Mail for their postal needs, but many have printed their own local and/or tourist stamps.
