Inquisitor as a Companion

Since I have a large amount of Inquisitors, I’ll probably do a few of these each week for OC Sharing Day, and next on my list is Berothaam.

Inquisitor Name: Berothaam Adaar

Companion Name: Berothaam

Race / Class / Specialization: Qunari / Mage / Necromancer

Varric’s Nickname for them: Stony

Short Bio: The scars of Berothaam’s past can be seen plainly on his face, but don’t expect to get anything more than grunts out of the Qunari if you ask him about it. A powerful mage with very little formal training. His trust is hard-earned, but once had, his loyalty knows few bounds.

Recruitment Mission: Berothaam can be found in the Hinterlands, fighting off a Templar attack just off the West Road. After going to Val Royeaux, Leliana delivers you a message from Scout Harding about a qunari she’s been tracking in the Hinterlands, and that triggers the event by which you find him. After helping him deal with the Templars, while he may not trust you, he thinks you’re alright enough that he’ll consider your offer to join the Inquisition, should you offer it.

Where they would be in Skyhold / Haven: Bero frequents the library hidden in the basement of Skyhold.

Personal quests:

Quest 1: (War Table) Berothaam spent a little time with other runaway Qunari mages in a hidden camp in Nevarra. He would like you to investigate what’s become of them.

Quest 2: Berothaam has been attempting to locate his family using Inquisition resources. He finds out that his mother and father died a little over a decade ago, but he has a younger sister who works with a mercenary company out of Antiva. He would like to set up a meeting with her and he would like the Inquisitor to go with him.

How to get their Approval: Be careful in your alliances, especially with Qunari; show him kindness and respect; minor approval gains from siding with mages.

How to get their Disapproval: Heavily utilize Bull’s resources (if you recruit him); side with the Templars; treat him poorly.

Are they Romanceable? Yes.

By Who? Any race, any gender, though females will have to gain more approval.

Can you have sex with them? Yes.

If they can be romanced and are not, will they begin a relationship / relationships with other character(s)? If so, who? He will begin a relationship with Dorian if unromanced.

Who are they friendly with? Dorian is his mentor, friend, and possibly lover. He also gets along well with Varric.

Who do they dislike? Bero strongly dislikes Iron Bull if he’s brought into the Inquisition. He also dislikes Solas and Cassandra, and he’s distrustful of Sera.

Opinions on mages / templars / how the world is going to shit? While he cares more about his own survival over the mage/templar conflict,  he generally supports the mages, being one himself.

So, how does Bero feel about griffons?

(Hope you don’t mind me posting this since it’s a question!) He knows absolutely nothing about griffons. His parents never taught him about them, and obviously he’s never experienced griffons in his lifetime either. It would depend on the situation in which he was exposed to them as well. Like if he were to discover a clutch of baby griffons or something like that, he’d probably secretly enjoy that. But if a griffon threatened him, that would be another story.

When they arrived at the Storm Coast to meet with Iron Bull's contact Iris hadn't expected to see a saarebas. She stopped walking and started to shake. Her companions looked at her with concern.

Her first instinct was to go to Berothaam for comfort. She wrapped her arms around and clung to Berothaam.  She felt his arms come around her. She also heard him growl. Iris wasn't sure who he was growling at, but she figured it was between Iron Bull and the Qunari they'd come to meet.

Iris felt safe in his arms, but still couldn't stop herself from shaking. She nuzzled her face into his chest in an attempt to get closer to him.

She heard Varric speak; "Stay here with her. We'll go talk to the Qunari."

It took a moment or two but eventually Iris felt Berothaam begin to stroke the back of her head. She had to admit that she liked it, but she did lift her head and wipe away some tears that had leaked.

"I'm sorry, but could I ask to stay like this a little longer?"

Berothaam gave her his best smile, though it was still fairly grim, and nodded.

Iris rested her head on his shoulder. "Thank you."

Iris walked around Skyhold with a tray of freshly baked cookies, and handing them out to the residents of Skyhold. She smiled as one by one her cookies were taken.

She spotted Berothaam as she entered the library. He was sitting alone and reading. She took a deep breath before she approached him. "Excuse me, Berothaam, would you like a cookie?"

He didn't look up from his book as he bluntly said; "No."

Iris was disappointed and hurt. She had hoped to better their relationship, but so far she hadn't made much, if any, progress.

She must have just stood there long enough for Berothaam to become concerned or annoyed because he looked up from his book. He looked at her apologetically. "Thank you," Iris broke from her thoughts, "but no."

Iris took a cookie and set it down on the table. "Here, just in case you change your mind." She looked at him for a brief moment before she headed off to continue passing out the rest of the cookies.

As she reached Fiona she saw Berothaam take a bite of the cookie she'd left him. He smiled as he swallowed and Iris felt a burst of happiness.

About: Orphaned at a young age, Bero lived with his first foster family for nearly a decade. Over the course of that decade, he was horribly abused by that family. Fortunately for him, it was discovered by the time he was 14; he was removed and the family arrested. But unfortunately, the damage was already done, and Bero was a cold and closed-off individual. However, by the time he turned 21, his new family had been supportive enough that he decided to go to college to make something of himself. He was accepted to Bay City University that year, and began attending school at the age of 22.
