I headcanon that after the war Tenzo gets really into baking. He finds a sort of peace in the motions of it and the precision of measuring out each ingredient. And it means he gets to drop off homemade goodies to old teammates.

I love it! I have this same headcanon for Kakashi so now seems like a good time to write about it!

“You’re hovering,” says Tenzō, aiming his smile at the bowl he has been whisking by hand for the past five minutes.

“Can’t a man watch another man beating it?” comes Kakashi’s voice, in the spirited way it does whenever he’s making a particularly awful joke. 

“That’s what I admire so much about you,” Tenzō deadpans, looking back at him. “Your sophisticated sense of humour.” 

Pushing off the wall he’s been leaning on, Kakashi says jovially, “You think I’m funny.” He gestures at the counter top, where Tenzō has laid out the rest of his ingredients. “Need a hand?”

Tenzō eyes him for a moment, gauging if this a segue for another joke, and then nods. “You can peel and cut the apples.”

Kakashi takes his place beside Tenzō, immediately working at the apples with a knife from the rack, though there’s certainly a more appropriate instrument in the drawers. Tenzō allows himself to watch his companion for a moment, hands as deft in this action as in any other, adding to the quiet rhythm of the kitchen. Kakashi accepts the stare without comment, though by the way he peels the next apple in one fluid motion, Tenzō suspects he might be showing off. 

Laughing, Tenzō reaches for his dry ingredients. He’s measured them out already, so with no more than the effort of combining the stiff mixture, he forms the batter. When Kakashi’s eyes follow his determined movements, he thinks he’s probably showing off as well. 

“Who’s this one for?” Kakashi asks, over the cadent knocking of his knife. “It’s sweet, so it wouldn’t be Sai or Sasuke. You gave Naruto those mooncakes last week. Sakura?”

Tenzō nods. “And Ino. They arrive from their mission in Kumo soon.”

“Tonight,” Kakashi agrees. “You wanted them to have some good food waiting for them after their long journey?”

Tenzō shrugs, and begins folding half of the apples into his batter. “Yes, and no. I like baking things. There doesn’t always need to be a reason.”

Kakashi nudges him with one bony hip. “My, my, Tenzō. Do you have a hobby?”

“Architecture is my hobby,” Tenzō says, bumping him right back. 

“No, that’s you taking your work home. Baking is an activity with no practical application to your work as a shinobi.” 

Tenzō holds back a contrary comment, and instead raises an eyebrow in challenge. “Since when are you so invested in work-life separation, Hokage-sama?”

Kakashi slides the rest of the apples in Tenzō’s direction and then sends him a grin he doesn’t trust at all. “Since I started taking my work home with me,” he says with a wink and a once-over. 

Tenzō flicks flour in his face, but they’re both still laughing by the time the cake makes it into the oven.
