I’m sitting here remembering the time in my AP English Literature class where we had a “literary salon” as a part of our final exam where we all had to dress like a character from one of our assigned readings throughout the year and engage in class discussions as that character. We were graded on vibes in the discussion and willingness to commit to the bit. There was also themed food.
I picked Ophelia from Hamlet (I brought danishes), spent the week before hunting down flowers and researching meanings, showed up in a dress with floral decorations, and then went to the bathroom before class and had my friend pour water all over me. She asked for commitment to the bit and I was there to deliver! I kept interrupting the discussions pointedly to spout off odd, whimsical poems hinting at other character’s doom (with references to their in-book events of course, I am a teacher’s pet) while handing them flowers with a smile.
She thanked me for my participation and then made me get a mop.
