Miss Minton is my absolute favourite character in this book. When I read it as a child I wanted to be Maia and sail down the amazon with a wild boy, but as an adult I have so much appreciation for Miss M.

Why I love her:

she loves books and prioritises books above all else

she isn't afraid to do what's right - even if it does lead to her being dismissed

she is eminently practical and proper

at all times she acts with dignity

she is a quietly adventurous and passionate woman, she dreamed of being a naturalist

she cares so much for her charge, she makes sure Maia has freedom to explore and learn but also makes sure she washes her face and brushes her hair

she gives great advice

she traversed the rainforest to find Maia without a second thought

she has a necklace of children's milk teeth
