5 basic refinements once you're in triangle pose: 1) Starting with the back leg, extend your calf into your heel and straighten your leg. Reach your tailbone in the direction of your back heel. Keep that, then: 2) Press down and forward with your front foot and from the inside out, pubic bone to outer hip, turn your thigh out. Point your front kneecap forward. Keep 1 and 2, and: 3) Rotate your navel, ribcage and chest up toward the ceiling. 4) Extend out through both hands, bring your lower shoulder blade down your back away from your ear. 5) Lean back into your back body. Chaturanga dandasana is one of the most common but mispracticed poses taught in public yoga classes. It's also dangerous when repeatedly practiced with poor alignment. When the shoulders are tight and the triceps and serratus anterior muscles weak, the front of the shoulders round toward the floor. When the core, glutes, and hamstrings are weak or unengaged, the low back arches and the hips lift away from the floor. Until one can build both the #strength and #flexibility to safely execute the pose, get a feeling for the pose and what it requires by using 2 blocks - one under the pelvis and the other under the ribcage just below the chest. Use a mirror to help yourself place your wrists directly under your elbows. Point your elbows straight back rather than out to the sides. Once everything is properly set up, press your hands down and hover above the blocks.
