Teiru/Tael/Beta Aipom
The real Aipom’s definitely the more interesting design of these two. The lack of a visible mouth especially makes Teiru boring against Aipom’s wide grin. I like Teiru’s cute eyes, though.
I’ve got this issue with a lot of the monkey Pokemon. They just...don’t have monkey hands. Hands are what separates primates from the other mammals, at least in my eyes. A monkey without hands might as well be a weird-faced cat! About half of the current monkey/ape/primate Pokemon have recognizable hands, but the other half have weird mittens. It bugs me!
So here we have Teiru, the prototype Aipom. Proper canon Aipom has the big tail hand and then these little handless nubs for arms. Teiru has the tail hand AND regular hands and I really like it! The detail on the sprite looks like they’re two-fingered hands, but that could just be a limitation of the sprite size. Either way, I love this look. It also looks like an inkblot rubberhose cartoon character made out of gloved hands. It’s really clever and I wish we had gotten this design!
I really love Aipom’s beta design; she looks like a 1930s cartoon character. She’d fit in perfectly with Mickey and Oswald, I think.
