But a person can spend years gathering information about another. They can memorize routines. Learn habits. Catalog preferences. Predict reactions with statistical accuracy. They can watch from windows. From doorways. From observation rooms and laboratories and security cameras. They can trace the trajectory of an entire life the way astronomers map the movement of distant stars.
And they can still fail to understand what they are looking at.
Because comprehension does not occur in the eyes, it occurs somewhere afterward.
It must be relaxing, Parrot thinks, to possess a mind so thoroughly insulated from embarrassment.
