He turns, expecting Wifies to be focused on the environment, the allay’s slow drift, the vex’s restless hovering.
Instead, Wifies is holding an emerald shard between two fingers.

“I said what I said,” Quackity replied with a shrug, breezy, like he hadn’t just lobbed an emotional grenade into the middle of the table. Like he hadn’t spent the last year and a half doing the exact opposite of this. “I get why people fawn over him. It’s whatever. He’s got that whole tortured-poet thing going on. I’m not afraid to admit it.”
Charlie nearly toppled sideways in his chair. “You just called Wilbur Soot cool.”
“Okay, yeah, he’s annoying as hell,” Quackity said quickly, pointing at him, “and he talks like he’s being recorded for an indie film. But I’m not gonna lie— he’s good at what he does. That’s respectable.”
Purpled blinked. Once. Twice. “Dude. Since when?”

They can watch from windows. From doorways. From observation rooms and laboratories and security cameras. They can trace the trajectory of an entire life the way astronomers map the movement of distant stars.
And they can still fail to understand what they are looking at.
Because comprehension does not occur in the eyes, it occurs somewhere afterward.
It must be relaxing, Parrot thinks, to possess a mind so thoroughly insulated from embarrassment.
