If there were to be a beta-reading site where you could upload your fics and give advice on other people's works, would any of you be interested?
Yes :)
No :(
Does anyone know where to look for a beta-reader for a fanfic? I usually would be looking for one from Fanfiction.net, but alas, at the moment it's facing quite a few problems.
I'm merely looking for a technical beta for my little fic because I've zero confidence posting my fanfics without someone looking those through. (I try to fix my grammar, sentence structures, etc., by myself, but when English isn't your mother tongue, it isn't.)
As for the fandom...well, I've written my fic in such a way one could read it fully fandom blind. (But it's cool if you know the canon characters.) The only thing that might be a bit turn-off is the fact it's canon character x OC fic.
So, if anyone knows where I could look for a possible beta reader or if one would be interested enough to even suggest themselves for the task, I would really appreciate that lot!
Beta Reader Search
Hi everyone!
One of our writers is on the lookout for a beta-reader and we were wondering if anyone would like to volunteer?
If so, please let us know when you can, either by interacting with this post somehow, sending us an ask or messaging one of the mods: @enchantedlandcoffee @hellolovers13 @babyhoneyheslt
Thank you!
This is for all my fellow writers and beta-readers.
We don’t get paid enough.
I gotta be honest... as a fandom writer sometimes I really envy my fellow fandom artists. Because they can actually hope to sell their art. I know that usually people don’t want to pay for art, they don’t want to pay for commissions but there are also good people (with money) out there who are willing to pay for an art. As a writer? I can hardly hope for something like that. My work is usually either taken for granted or even demanded. My work which is a form of art is much more often criticized and brushed off.
Last month I started writing a fanfiction. I finished it two days ago. It’s hardly that long - just a little bit over 15k words. Most of fanfiction readers don’t even consider it what they call “a long fic”.
But here’s the thing: it’s not “just a little bit over 15k words”. It’s fucking 15k words and I spent whole month writing it. And by month I mean - every day I tried to write one or two lines more, then I deleted them and then wrote them again. After that I read entire thing from the very beginning and editted some of the older parts. It took me at least an hour per day. Which means that I spent at least 30 hours over this one story.
The best part is that I’ve already estimated how much I’m going to get for that story. Do you wanna know “the prize”?
Considering the rating of the story, the length, the pairing and the fandom I estimated the story to get around 60 kudos and (if I’m lucky) 4 or maybe 5 comments.
I get 60 kudos and 4 comments for 30 hours of my work.
60 kudos and 4 comments for 30 hours I spent on writing.
And god forbit if I subtly suggest that someone could tip me for that. No. That would be cruel of me, wouldn’t it? I mean... Writing is my hobby, isn’t it?? It was fun for me, wasn’t it?? So basically I had just as much fun writing this as reader had reading this, right? That evens out!
Wrong.
Reader will spend maximum one hour reading it.
I spent 30 hours reading, writing and editing.
It doesn’t even begin it even out.
On the top of that english isn’t even my first language and despite the fact that I am quite fluent, some of my readers make me feel insecure about it so I also needed to find myself a beta. Yes, I was being pointed out that my work - my art - isn’t good enough. ”I’m your fan but could you ask someone to beta your stories” - that was the first comment coming from that person. They read my stories but they never even paid me with a comment until they wanted to point out my mistake. It felt great, guys. It really did.
So I also found a beta. And don’t get me started on the fact that my bets-reader won’t get paid even as much as I will - all they have is a long and strongly-worded “thank you” from me. They also spent hours editing but their hard work is taken for granted. It was a demand.
So this is for all my fellow writers and beta-readers: For all of you I wish that one day are hard work will be recognized as it deserves to be recognized. I hope that one day we will get paid properly even if it’s only with kudos and comments. I hope that maybe one day, no one will mock us for wanting to be tipped with money (wow, what a concept) as we deserve to be.
For now though - stay strong and take no shit. What you are doing is incredible.
You are incredible for selling your imagination for free.
I will not apologize for any mistakes in this post.
Sorry, I didn’t have money to pay for a beta-reader this time.
I'm still looking for a beta-reader for my Hinny fic btw! Nothing too intense, just someone who can tell me if the storyline is alright and if my w o r d s make sense
