“I will ascend to heaven. I will raise my throne above the stars of God.”
He rocked back and forth, his hands held out where he’d held them for his lashings. His palms were red, raw and bleeding, and he couldn’t stand to put them down or even move his fingers. He had the book propped against his thighs, staring blankly into the worn pages.
“I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly-”
A drop of blood landed on a passage’s number, warping the paper around it.
“-on the utmost heights-”
He shivered and sniffled, tears and snot dribbling over his lips in a thick mess.
“-of the sacred mountain.”
He forced his fingers to close then, digging his nails into the welts on his hands. Pain stabbed through him and he moaned out, closing his eyes and letting his head lolled back.
“I will ascend above the top of the clouds….”
He dug harder until he could feel blood streaming down his arms and onto the bed. Punishment for the sins he couldn’t stop… Salvation for the others he’d take on in their stead. The Messiah had suffered and so would he.
“I will make myself like the Most High….”
He giggled unsteadily and bit his lip, curling in on himself again and rocking all the more. He felt sick again, and if they knew… if they knew. He thought back to the chapter again, at the lesson he should be learning, and smiled.
“I will ascend to heaven… I will raise my throne above the stars of God…”
