Sandstorm Jones walked along the trail to the peak of Mt. Ebott, hat in hand. A gentle winter breeze blew through the trees, and a gentle light of the sun shined down upon him. It was nothing like the harsh, yellow light of the Swelterstone. It seemed more content encouraging life along rather then burning it out.
Jones found himself walking this trail often, whenever he needed to think. There was a lot to think about. After centuries underground, monsterkind had been freed to roam the surface world once more. Most monsters had fled as far from Mt. Ebott as possible, settling in human citied across the world, and occasionally founding their own. Almost every corner of the world had a thriving monster community, where monsters of all shapes and sizes could go and feel welcome.
Jones couldn't bring himself to join them. He couldn't bring himself to ever stray too far from Mt. Ebott. He wasn't the only one. He wasn't the only one who had lost too much in the underground to just leave it behind for good. At the foot of the mountain, there was a small settlement for those who couldn't bring themselves to leave. Jones didn't join them either.
Jones had lost a dear friend of him in the underground. Ceroba, his best friend since childhood, the only one who had always been there for him gunned down by a human child. Her dust scattered to the wind.
After Ceroba's death, rumors started to spread throughout the underground. Rumors of a monster who manipulated others for her own benefit. Rumors of a monster who felt nothing for anyone. Rumors of a mother who killed her own child. Rumors about Ceroba.
Nobody had the audacity to put such rumors in any official papers or news, but the word of mouth did it's job. In the days that followed, every conversation that happened in the saloon of the wild east made its way to those awful rumors. Dina, for her part, didn't let such things be said too loudly, and even let Jones off of his entertainer duties a few times when she noticed it starting to really get to him. He could still hear their conversations from his room above the bar though. They always said the same things. "I hear she had the entire town in her grasp." "I hear turned the abandoned Steamworks to serve her own purposes." "I hear she killed her daughter and felt nothing."
He couldn't take it. He couldn't take hearing his best friend, the only person he could ever say was truly there for him, remembered as a cold hearted killed, an evil manipulative mastermind the likes of which the underground had never seen.
The worst part of it all? It was true. Ceroba had killed her child. She hadn't been torn up about it. She had lied to everyone she knew. He had spent almost a year being friends with a child murdering monster.
But still that didn't mean she deserved this! She didn't deserve to be remembered as a heartless murderer by every monster that ever lived! They-they didn't know her! Not like he did.
Jones grip on his hat intensified as the memories came flooding back. He remembered the first time he and Ceroba met. He was only a child, and had awoken to find almost all of the hair on his head had fallen off. His parents had given him a hat to wear to school that day, but a couple of bullies took notice and snatched it from him, leaving his newly bald head on display for the whole school to see. He had spent the entire day in tears until he met her. Unlike the others, she hadn't commented on his lack of hair. She'd asked him if he was okay and offered to eat lunch with him. They'd complained about homework and classes together. He had felt as if he had finally made a friend.
That's who Ceroba was. His friend. Maybe more, if she hadn't met Chujin. His friend who was always there for him, who always knew what to say. Who would now be remembered by all as the absolute worst of monsterkind. Worse even, than their warmonger of a kind who had killed 6 children, who didn't receive even half as much criticism as his fallen friend.
Back in the underground, it was often said that the monsters who died didn't really leave the living behind. That sometimes, if you were in a quiet enough place for long enough, you could feel their presence beside you, as if they never left. In the weeks that followed Ceroba's passing, he started to have odd dreams, wandering the desolate streets of New Home followed by a strange shadow. Looking up at the gems in the ceiling of waterfall, unable to look to his side yet feeling a presence there. He knew it was her, he could feel it. But ever since he had moved to the surface, the dreams had stopped. No matter how hard he clutched the broken shards of her mask at night, he never felt anything.
Was she still down there? trapped in the underground for her crimes? doomed to the burning heat of the Swelterstone, never to know the light of the sun? She didn't deserve that! She didn't deserve any of this!
Jones stopped walking. He had arrived at the summit of Mt. Ebott. he stood upon the ground where the first monsters to exit the underground had first gazed upon the sun. He turned around.
Behind him lay the entrance to the underground, collapsed and broken. He had tried multiple times to move the rocks out of the way and reopen the path, but to no avail. They were simply too big for him to move by himself, and nobody was willing to help him reopen the path to monsterkinds prison.
Still, though the entrance this may be, it was never where those humans who entered the underground came from. Nobody was entirely sure how those humans had entered the underground, and with their only entrance blocked off, nobody could check. There were rumors though. Rumors of a beam of light from the surface illuminating a patch of flowers deep within the ruins. Rumors of a small cave on the side of Mt. Ebott. Rumors of a fall to great for any monster to survive.
Jones wasn't the greatest wilderness explorer, but he occasionally went off the beaten path. Found neat little sights he wouldn't have seen otherwise. Found the remnants of ancient footprints in the soil. Found the entrance of a cave covered by vines.
Jones knew where the second entrance to the underground was. He had seen the fall too great for any monster to survive. He had thought about it before. Stood on the precipice and looked down, less than a step away from falling. He didn't actually know if he would survive the fall or not. But no matter what happened, he knew that he'd be with her again.

does the betastorm fandom have a consensus on which betastorm fic is the best?
21 and 29 for betastorm 😁
21: Jones snores. Every night. Really loudly. Also Ceroba’s constant manipulation but he’s already used to that (though he hasn’t realized it) 😁
29: I imagine it would be somewhere in the wild east, maybe in the saloon. It would all be the result of some sort of convoluted manipulation scheme on Ceroba’s part, of course. I’m tempted to try my hand at a fic about it.
