i. writer’s block | part 2
I had always loved the beach. I loved it so that it felt as though it was my own muse. It was common to carry my trusty notepad about and have it ready for the eminent epiphanies. Most times - I could swear it! - I believed I was the stones of Brindleton Bay, being drowned and damped, and surfaced anew in an endless inspiration stream that crashed onto me like mighty waves.
That morning, however, I did not place my notepad in the pocket tied around my waist, fastened into my petticoat. It made me jittery to leave it at home, on my desk. Yet, I knew no waves would dance at my shore that day, as they had not done so ever since I read the news of Maisie's engagement. My words, I realised, were now widowed. I had drained them, leaving my mind - once overwhelmingly fruitful - stale, and idle, and meaningless. I supposed it was bound to happen, for I had inked all my passion in letters left unanswered.
I only noticed I'd been relentlessly pacing once Matthew called for me. I couldn't tell how long I'd been shuffling, dipping my feet in the sand. All I knew is that, now, I stood - barefoot and unkempt - far from where I had prepared us a spot for an informal picnic. My agitation was but a mere distraction from the memories that swallowed me when in stillness. If I thought I was the gravel covering the beach, Maisie, then, was the whole world entirely. I saw her upon the rocks, swinging her limbs as she bravely jumped into the water. I saw her weeping, wading silently in the mourning gown she had worn at her grandmother's funeral. I saw her chasing seagulls, looking for empty shells, calling for my name, and seizing my hand as she stared in awe at the vastness of the sea… I could not make sense of what we were now. I could not, for it did not make sense at all.
Above all, I was most anxious to meet Matthew's beau. 'What a queer situation', I thought, 'my brother's sweetheart is a boy!' No, not a boy, but a man of my age. A man who had been brave enough to come all the way to meet Matthew's family. It was only I, of course, but still! I could not have imagined myself having tea alongside Maisie's younger sister if she were aware of our natures. But, then again, I was but plain and fearful, and terribly sentimental now. When Matthew cried "Bethany! Over here!" and I turned, and caught a glimpse of the figure walking beside him, it lacked me bravery to look at their faces at first.
I was, oh, so timid that I felt I could weep. Of pride and joy, surely! Or, possibly, of jealousy, for I internally begged that the roles were reversed and it were I who brought Maisie as my sweetheart for Matthew to greet.

happy love day.
I'm a sucker for you crappy Valentine’s Day cards 😌
♫ some things never change
Ohhhhh nonny, you don’t know what you have done UHUIHGD. I’m sorry, I went overboard with it - as usual - but that was SUCH A SWEET “request”.
This scene is 100% canon so, spoilers? Kind of? lsdjfkl.
Beth and Mary are around 60 years old in here. I imagine they’d try to keep up with fashion trends with the help of some younger family members, but they’d have stuck with a 20s hairstyle for a while longer. Also, you can’t see in the shots but they have a piano in the parlour where Mary plays often and they both sing together. Beth especially likes when Mary sings to her in foreign languages. You also can’t see the collection of… Wait no, that’s a spoiler.
Thank you so much for sending me this!! 🥺You are so adorable for having thought of asking me that. And your headcanon was so spot on because Beth and Mary love to dance together, even if it’s a bit wonky because of Beth’s lack of waltzing/slow dancing skills. I can’t picture it being any other way. By the way, you lads won’t meet Lucy in the story because she was probably born in the 30s, but you’ll see other pets, don’t worry 😌

MARY, singing: This I know is true, when winds are tired of blowing // When grass is tired of growing, I’ll be tired of you.
LUCY: Meow.
BETHANY: Hmm? Maisie, I think Lucy also wants to be sang to.
MARY: Does she now? Well, come on here, you clingy little thing. // Don’t be jealous, we love you, too.
BETHANY: She got that from you, you know?
MARY: Oh, shut it.
Don't mind me, I just wanted an excuse to test out @hula-zombie's Holly Jolly dresses. They are so pretty & cute plus they give me major vintage Christmas vibes, I can't 🥺
a steampunk! lookbook for @sims-and-pixels & @wildtree-garden.
I am this close to making this AU. I just love the steampunk aesthetic so freaking much aaaaaa. There's something so gay about it, idk jdfkl.
Thank you for the prompt, lads! This was SO much fun! x
"You and Miss Norman spend quite a lot of time together." Timothy Laurence declared before taking a quick graceless sip of tea. The noise he made caused Mary's lip to twitch in repulse. "I had never noticed until today."
"My! Please, forgive me, Mr. Laurence, for I used to take you for a clever man." She sneered. "Miss Norman is to keep me accompanied. She is my companion, after all."
"Naturally, naturally!" Timothy chuckled. "However… Is a companion good enough for you?"
"It will have to be." Mary's sharp tone announced that the topic was not in for further discussion. And, with elegance of a noble, the young woman took a long sip of her own tea as if to demonstrate how it was properly done.
Regency it is, nonny! Because I'm absolutely shite when it comes to anything before the 19th century. Actually, I've never done a Regency sim in my life, so bare with me. I know Beth's hat isn't accurate, but it's about the ✨bow✨ OK?
Regency Beth&Mary is basically just Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse running away together. And, let me tell you lads, I'm here for it 👁👄👁
