NYC is finally phasing out the tradition open-top green steel garbage cans that have been around since the 1930s. Since calling for design proposals to replace the city's 23,000 green wire public trash cans, the city has selected three finalists – Group Project, IonDesign GmbH Berlin, and Smart Design. The #city launched the design competition to create a practical and efficient litter basket that reduces litter and better serves both Sanitation Workers and the public. Nearly 200 designs were submitted from all over the world. Now the three finalists will refine their designs and produce twelve full-size prototypes that will be tested in #NYC neighborhoods in summer 2019. The winner will be eligible to contract with the city for further design development to ensure the ability to mass-produce their waste baskets. The new bins are part of the city's ambitious plan to have zero landfill waste by 2030. #BetterBin (at New York City Department of Sanitation) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrVwwy0lBKU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19zj74b5t0366
