been enjoying pixel detective games while withdrawing from fandoms. i highly recommend both darkside detective games. they're fun, point and clicks with witty humour and a lovable duo of goofballs. also early december we got a teaser that a third instalment is on the way. that's also neat. EDIT: forgot to emphasize the point that they solve paranormal crimes. think... mulder and scully but scully is a himbo, anti-corporation cop (somehow??) trust me. so fucking GOOD.
then i played lacuna. which is like... a noire detective game set in a cyberpunky world. it only autosaves, there is no manual saving. the point is to make decisions, navigate difficult dialogue trees and living with the consequences of your actions. i really loved the story and gameplay, the visuals are stunning. i love pixel art games and they knocked it out of the park.
now i'm playing between horizons, from the studio that made lacuna. it seems to follow the same philosophy of one save file and just working through the story the best way you can, with your own intuition. i haven't gotten very far but the visuals are even better on this one and the concept/premise is really exciting. instead of a noire/cyberpunky crime you're dealing with crimes... in space! i'm excited to keep playing.
minds beneath us is also just. wow. not only is the pixel art like.. jaw-droppingly gorgeous but the story is just... holy fuck. i will never spoil a damned thing, but i definitely recommend if you enjoy dystopian futurescapes/also kind of cyberpunky and it's not... a detective game per se but it's something else entirely.
all good shit.
Whoops, forgot this blog exists. Oc art be upon ye

Stella and Chichi from Between Horizons
This detective mystery takes place on a generation ship in deep space, and I think more people should play it!
I started playing Between Horizons yesterday. I enjoyed the studio's previous game, Lacuna, a noir-y sci-fi detective game where our choice affect the outcome of the game. And yeah, I didn't fully solve the case! Because I missed clues! I also fucked up one dialogue in a completely spectacular manner and got someone shot! :D I fixed the detective's relationship wit his ex-wife, though. I am proud of my result.
I've always dreamed of a videogame where your choices and behaviours actually matter, and not just in the form of obvious binary choices, so Lacuna thrilled me, and Between Horizons thrills me, too. It also absolutely terrifies me. All the introduction texts at the beginning, telling me that the game auto-saves, there is no turning back, your choice matter, you cannot undo decisions, you may not find out until much later if you solved a case correctly! There's also a timer for multiple choice dialogue options, and I'm stressed out already! :D :D :D
But also, yay for being chief of security on a space station. Like Odo! Not that Odo is my role model. The opposite may be closer to the truth.
(With Deep Space 9 in mind, I think it'd be nice if for the studio's next game, they'd do a science-fiction setting with alien species in the mix, since this would make the dozens of characters more visually distinct at first glance. And I like aliens.)
Now I'm off to investigate some space crimes!
