Movement exhibition ideas

Extending from our recent presentation about how we would remix objects from Charles and Ray Eames’s exhibition, we were then asked as the final part of the project to make our own object in response to our movement. My ideas consisted of creating some sort of typographic sculptural piece that combined the arabic and english language. It’s concept being inspired from a Dutch project called Between Realities. 

‘Within the context of the theatricalisation of every day life, public space can be observed and studied as scenography. The multiplication of staged and imagined realities can be most intensely felt in urban public space where layers of tourism, entertainment, consumption, art, work, leisure, history, policies, and politics come together. It is precisely here where we can see how people live between realities and how they cope with its complexity.’

The Dutch project plan "Between Realities" for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space 2015, distinguishes between five different coping strategies: sheltering, fleeing, fighting, negotiating, surrendering. Each of these strategies/practices entails a particular attitude towards reality. Either a movement away from reality (hide or shelter), an engagement with reality (fight or negotiate) or a plunge in reality (surrender).

Comments: 

Refugee’s are coming into European countries and are bombarded with this complex way of life, a ‘reality’ as previously stated, how are they coping with so much information being thrown at them? Perhaps ‘reality’ isn’t the way that one could describe what they are experiencing, I think that’s quite an obnoxious way to describe it, since they are struggling with the bare bones of what it means to be human, identity within a world and being part of something bigger than themselves.  

Discussed this concept with my tutor and we talked about the idea or the space between theoretical reality and the philosophical idea of ‘otherness’: Otherness, the characteristics of the Other, is the state of being different from and alien to the social identity of a person and to the identity of the Self.
